Extra-illustrated large paper and a special Bayntun full brown crushed morocco onlay binding featuring a centerpiece of the Palace of Westminster. No. 85 of 111 large paper editions. Many of the plates are double paged and a few are folding. Regarding the binding all edges gilt. Gilt ruled borders on boards -- six evenly spaced lines with jutting squared corners suggestive of a fortification design. These within a simple outer ruled border close to the edge. Five raised bands with compartments decorated with ruled rectangles and corner dots. Turn-ins with corner abstracted floral decoration. Attractive armorial bookplate of Colonel Sir Harold Mitchell 1900-1983 businessman and politician who was at one point vice chairman of the Conservative Party under Churchill. He was created a baronet in 1945. The title became extinct with his death. Clamshell box has stains especially heavy on one of the sides and one spine edge is worn through with its cloth entirely lifted and rolling away with frayed threads apparent and the underlying card exposed. Still this box retains structural integrity and has clearly helped preserve the pristine quality of the book's extradordinary binding. Photo File. Chatto and Windus unknown
réf. 20400St Andrews Fife Scotland . 15 December 1855. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition aged and worn. A good long letter full of content thanking him for a presentation copy of his 'Translations from the Greek Anthology' published without date in London by Nissen and Parker. He has perused most of Macgregor's translations 'with great pleasure & several with a sentiment which the word pleasure too coldly expresses'. He has not 'examined them critically comparing them minutely with the Greek text in order to satisfy myself whether the meaning of the Authors was faithfully rendered. I have thought it better & more consonant with your professed design to look at your translations from your own point of view and judge whether you have clothed the spirit of the original in the dress which the Authors themselves had they written not in Greek but in English would probably have employed.' An interesting discussion of the difficulties of translating from Greek 'the most flexible of all languages' into English 'its structure singularly devoid of flexion' follows. He praises some of the work of the Greek and Roman poets as 'literary gems polished to a finished perfection & with a chaste beauty of setting which leaves nothing to be desired'. On the final page of the letter he has as he explains 'jotted down a few words phrases & lines which by a careful elaboration you may perhaps amend' although he considers that 'all in all your translation seems to me to be in general remarkably well & sometimes felicitously rendered'. St Andrews [ Fife, Scotland ]. 15 December 1855. hardcover
réf. 22055No date or place. 1p 4to. In good condition with slight creasing to extremities on a leaf of 'Onion Skin' paper. A sixteen line poem in three stanzas beneath which is written boldly and in pencil: 'W B. Stanford Trinity College Dublin'. The poem is one of Stanford's best and best-known and features in Donagh MacDonagh's 'Poems from Ireland' 1944 and Brendan Kennelly's 'Penguin Book of Irish Verse' 1970. The present version exhibits no variations from the text printed by Kennelly. The first stanza reads: 'When the landfolk of Galway converse with a stranger softly the men speak more softly the women light words on their lips and an accent that sings in traditional cadences once plucked by harpists to cheer melancholic carousals of kings when the landfolk of Galway converse with a stranger.'
