A very rare miniature English-Chinese Dictionary printed in Hong Kong perhaps in the 1890s or c.1900 in the early decades of British Hong Kong. The dictionary was printed by the Chiu Yick Book Store of which we find no record. None in OCLC one located at the Lytton Chinese History Museum. Chiu Yick Book Store unknown

Modern gray paper over boards few splits to paper at head of spine black spine label with gilt lettering page edges stained red. Very fresh copy with nice cream paper some smudging and marginal soiling to rear signatures with one instance of marginal worming. Title with a few smudges else a near fine copy. Nice copy of this influential Renaissance dictionary of Roman civil law with very handsome title page that served as a foundational reference for early modern legal scholarship. The text was first printed in Basel in 1538 and later revised and expanded to reflect the continuity of Justinian law. Boards and spine have edge wear and bumping/crushing at extremities fading to spine and some marking/staining. Very slight outward curving of front board. Some splitting at gutter between front pastedown and FFEP resulting in a slight loosening of the binding. Page block edges are tanned/soiled upper edge is darkened. Page block contents are clean clear and bright. This book is considered the pre-eminent style guide to British English usage pronunciation and writing. Colloquially referred to as Fowler's Usage which became the standard for other style guides to writing in English. Immensely influential this first edition remains in print to this day.
