An early Spanish-language edition of the complete Jewish High Holiday prayer book Machzor based on the original translation by Abraham Usque originally printed in Ferarra Italy in 1553. This edition contains some added material not previously present including most prominently Solomon ibn Gabirol's famed philosophical poem "Keter Malkhut" Royal Crown which over the years has come to be read as part of the Yom Kippur service in some Jewish traditions. Published by Dr. Efraim Bueno and Jona Abravanel to serve members of the then sizable Sephardic Jewish community in Amsterdam. A significant portion of the community were former Conversos Jews who had outwardly converted to Catholicism during the inquisition in Spain who then emmigrated and were able to reestablish their Jewish identity and thus were unable to read Hebrew hence the text's publication in Spanish. As stated in the foreword this edition includes some additions to the text not included in previous versions and omits some material deemed to have been unnecessary. The prayer book starts with the penitential prayers Selichot p.3-47 which includes decorative head and endpeices. This section is followed by the Rosh Hashanah service p.48-195 and then the Yom Kippur service including the "Keter Malkhut" p.254-289. Title page is has a decorative vignette printed in woodblock and is printed with the Hebrew date "5412". Pages 305-352 are misprinted as "321-368" with their correct numbers handwritten above in ink. All text in Spanish. Binding with some rubbing and scratches to extremities and to the covers. Front hinge starting to split slightly at the head and tail of the spine. Missing one of the metal clasps on the back cover. Starting at interior covers. Some minor to light sporadic damp staining and foxing throughout the text. Period signature of the previous owner "Silva" in ink on on the title page and p.200. Name of another previous owner in ink on the interior back cover. Book block tight overall. Binding in good- interior in very good- condition overall. Quite scarce. Dr. Efraim Ephraim Bueno aka Martin Alvarez 1599-1665 was a Portuguese-born Jewish physician in Amsterdam of the famed Iberian-Jewish Bueno medical dynasty and prominent member of the city's Sephardic community. He served for many years as the personal physician to famed artist Rembrandt van Rijn who in fact depicted Bueno in two of his works one an etching and the other a painted portrait. He received his medical education and degree in Bordeaux and was known to have practiced medicine in Amsterdam until the time of his death. In addition to his medical practice Bueno was an accomplished biblical scholar who along with Jona Abravanel published numerous Jewish works the on the bible and Jewish Law. Jona Abravanel 1593-1667 was a Sephardic Jewish poet in Amsterdam from the prominent Abravanel family. He was the nephew of Famed Portueguse-Dutch Rabbi and printer Menasseh ben Israel. Together with his uncle and Dr. Efraim Bueno he was responsible for publishing numerous works of Judiaca in the 17th century. In this edition the title page was mistaken printed with the word "Kuyper" which was then correct via a scrap of paper pasted on top. Fisher 1908-1992 contributed an introduction to the second Arion Press book "A Commonplace Book of Cookery" in 1975 but died before we were able to pay tribute to her by publishing her first major literary work a translation of Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin's 1755-1826 famous gastronomic essays. This book originally made for hire in 1948 for the Limited Editions Club formed her as an author on subjects relating to food wine dining and living well in the largest sense. She became a good friend of the Press extending invitations to "the crew" to come to her home in St. Helena for a hike and a swim followed by lunch where the conversation was always lively but never about food. The artist Wayne Thiebaud delivered to Hoyem a large pile of original ink drawings and told him to use what he wanted. Hoyem made photocopies of the drawings and sorted and combined them as he saw fit and Thiebaud immediately approved the selection. He also made the nine lithographs in color and drew a design for the cover of the binding that showed the skills he learned as a commercial graphic artist. A trade edition was published by Counterpoint in 1996. Note that while this copy is marked as a "Display" copy we do not believe it was actually used as such as both the book and slipcase are in fine condition. ___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. The project was undertaken by writer translator and editor Nathan Haskell Dole a popular member of the Boston literary set. Educated at Philips Andover and Harvard he was much influenced by family friends like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. He showed an early facility for languages teaching himself to read French German Greek and Latin. Our set was designed by Dole to be the crown jewel of a library combining beauty and luxury with Classical erudition. The bindings here are unsigned but are very similar to those on a copy of this work in the Phoebe Boyle sale bound by the Adams Bindery. Ralph Randolph Adams was along with Henry Stikeman and a handful or others one of the great American art bookbinders of his era. His workshop produced bindings of notable beauty and craftsmanship. The New York Times 11 October 1902 described an Adams binding as "so exquisite in design and execution that those long skeptical of the ability of Americans to bind artistically should now be convinced of their error. . . . It is to be hoped that all American binders will be encouraged to strive toward producing designs like Adams' that are in a measure original and which show more of the individual touch of the artist.". 1922réf. 204721922. Full Limp Red Calf. Slipcase -- marbled paper pastedown on all sides other than opening. Chemise or inner folder -- thick glossy card stock all sides other than that has red calf with title label. Emily Swinton. Magnificent illuminated manuscript version of the Rubaiyat or some verses from the Rubaiyat. The illuminated borders are singular -- their design is unlike that we are familiar with and not even vaguely similar to anything we have ever seen produced by a latter-day illuminator professional or amateur. Their tracery is of blues greens reds some yellow in a few instances and not least the all important gilt. The illuminator surely was paying homage to some Islamic and Persian illumination in her palette but overall these sources are but influences; the illuminations are far from merely imitative. The design pulls you in and as one gazes longer one will discover small figurative imagery woven into the lines and swirls of the larger ornamentation. Words are beyond us to come close to capturing their complexity and character -- our photos hopefully will impart something of that. Let us just say the colors are deep and bold. Within these extraordinary borders is the calligraphic text rendered in a stunning easily legible Gothic Fraktur script. And there are four dream-like miniature watercolors as well of scenic Persian villages. N.d. circa early 1920s. 4to. 28.5 by 19 cm. Unpaginated 14 leaves with illumination -- illumination on one side. The back side of the leaf then left blank. Tissue guards for each page with illumination. The first leaf has no text -- it is a rectangular abstract design suggestive perhaps of a spectacular rug and inspired by such illuminated painting as one finds in many an antiquarian Koran. The next leaf is the title page with the words appearing to float on the page. The lettering has a distinctive verticality and the gilt letters are both clearly the letters they are supposed to be but have an abstraction that one can imagine they are Arabic script as well. The last two leaves with a more restrained formalistic illumination has evenly spaced dome-shaped pointers as one finds in Koranic decoration to highlight important passages. The binding slipcase and chemise are functional but don't really do the contents justice. Other than some crease marks on the calf and light wear overall to these protective features the binding and slipcase present no issues. unknown books
