Full calf extra gilt all edges gilt marbled endpapers ribbon marker. Bookplate on front pastedown else fine. $95. The Donation of Constantine is the most famous forgery in European history. Written in the eighth century it was allegedly a fourth-century document by which the Emperor Constatine the Great gave extensive privileges and property to Pope Sylvester I. This document was accepted as genuine for seven centuries and was cited by at least ten popes in contentions for the recognition of papal control. Lorenzo Valla's 1440 treatise circulated in manuscript established the Donation of Constatine was forged and made him a pioneer of modern historical criticism. Because of church opposition the essay was not formally published in print until Ulrich von Hutten's edition of 1517. This reprint of the 1922 edition of Valla's treatise and presents the Latin text and English translation of it and the forged donation document on facing pages. unknown books

Jules Bledsoe a baritone is regarded as the first major African American opera singer. We have no idea why Bledsoe was getting a $3.00 check in Wacon in 1932 although he did continue to have family there and that is where he was buried. We are not entirely confident that it was Bledsoe who actually endorsed this $3 check rather than a helpful relative. unknown books
