J. Cæsare ad Carolum VII. Cum eorundem imaginibus ex optimorum numismatum fide ad vivum expressis. Auctore Laurentio Patarol cujus vita nunc primum datur. An appealing fourth edition of Lorenzo Patarols illustrated numismatic history of the Roman Byzantine and Holy Roman imperial succession printed at Venice by Giovanni Battista Pasquali in 1743.The work presents a chronological series of emperors empresses Caesars and rival claimants in the eastern and western empires extending from Julius Caesar to Charles VII. The biographical text is accompanied by 15 folding engraved plates of imperial portraits derived from coins and medals making the volume both a historical compendium and an important example of eighteenth-century numismatic scholarship. This copy has particularly appropriate collecting provenance. A French inscription on the front pastedown dated Livorno 26 June 1753 names J. D. de Montets J. R. de Vall Travers and Monsieur de Guise apparently recording ownership or association during an Italian journey. The reference to Vall Travers as governor and travelling companion to Monsieur de Guise is consistent with Rodolphe Valltravers who is documented as serving as governor to John Guise while travelling in Italy in 1753. The volume was later bound for the noted Leeds numismatist and collector William Boyne whose gilt arms and the wording W. Boyne Leeds 1850 appear on the upper board. The Valltravers identification is probable rather than conclusively established.PROVENANCEContemporary French ownership or travel inscription to the front pastedown dated Livorno 26 June 1753 naming J. D. de Montets J. R. de Vall Travers and Monsieur de Guise.Probably associated with Rodolphe Valltravers later FRS who is documented as travelling in Italy in 1753 as governor to John Guise.Later bound for William Boyne of Leeds numismatist antiquarian and collector with his gilt arms and the date 1850 to the upper board. Boyne was an important writer on British tokens and assembled extensive collections of coins medals and books.CONDITION COLLATION & COPY NOTESA sound and attractive copy in later calf the boards framed with a gilt fillet and the upper board bearing the gilt arms and name of W.
