1758réf. 896M15Paris: N. B. Duchesne 1758. Leather. Very Good. 7" by 4.5". Not Stated. A new edition of this five-volume set of the works of the important French playwright Pierre de Marivaux. A five-volume set in full mottled calf bindings with marbled end papers.Ink inscription to the title page of each volume. Bookplate of the Rev. F. Hutcheson to the front paste down of Volumes II III IV and V. Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux 1688-1763 commonly known simply as Marivaux is considered one of the most important French playwrights of the eighteenth century. He wrote many comedies for the Comédie-Française and the Comédie-Italienne of Paris including Le Jeu de l'amour et du hasard and Les Fausses Confidences. He also published a number of essays and two important but unfinished novels La Vie de Marianne and Le Paysan parvenu. This five-volume set includes much of Marivaux's best-known works including Le Triomphe de l'amour Les Fausses Confidences L'Île de la raison and La Dispute. Most of the plays are complete with their individual original half title pages and original title pages with dates ranging from 1740 to 1760 and one 'Le Legs' with the publisher Prault though the title page for each volume states that this set was published in 1758 by N. B. Duchesne. The contents page for all five volumes found in Volume I matches the contents of the individual volumes. This is a scarce work particularly in a complete five-volume set. In full mottled calf bindings. Externally generally smart though rubbed to the spines and extremities. Gilt is a little faded to the spine. A couple of small losses to the leather to the boards of Volumes II III IV and V. A small loss to the gutter of the eighth page of Volume I. Cracking to the tail of the front joint to Volume V. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good N. B. Duchesne hardcover
1781réf. 85543A Paris: Chez La veuve Duchesne 1781. Fine. Chez La veuve Duchesne A Paris 1781 12.50 x 20 cm 12 volumes reliés First complete collected edition published in Paris in 1781 in twelve volumes. For the first time it brings together in a single set Marivauxs plays novels periodical writings and a number of prose works previously scattered across separate publications. Portrait of Marivaux as frontispiece painted by Pougin de Saint-Aubin within an ornamental frame designed by Clément-Pierre Marillier and engraved by François-Robert Ingouf known as Ingouf le Jeune. Uniform contemporary full mottled tan calf. Spines with raised bands gilt compartments and rolls at foot; tan morocco lettering- and numbering-pieces; triple gilt fillet borders to the boards. Some localised restoration and wear to headcaps and joints rubbing and a few worn corners; in volume I the tissue guard has caused browning to the facing title-page and the following leaf. Despite these signs of use the set remains harmonious the paper generally fresh with only a few somewhat browned gatherings. Until then collected editions had chiefly enshrined Marivaux the dramatist; in 1781 these twelve volumes at last restore the writer in his full range bringing together with the plays his novels periodical writings and prose works previously scattered across separate publications. Alongside the thirty-two plays appear Les Effets surprenants de la sympathie Le Spectateur françois LIndigent philosophe Le Cabinet du philosophe Homère travesti Le Don Quichotte moderne LÉducation dun prince Le Miroir La Voiture embourbée and Le Télémaque travesti; behind the author of the comedies of feeling the novelist moralist and observer of manners and vanity comes back into view. Published eighteen years after Marivauxs death the collection also belongs to the moment when he was first being firmly established among the classics of the century. The frontispiece portrait no longer merely supplies a likeness of the author of the best-known plays; it now opens onto an oeuvre gathered ordered and presented in all its diversity. Tchemerzine further notes that Duviquets edition of 1825-1830 did not reproduce the entire contents of this 1781 collection. By the end of the 18th century as Marivauxs name was already beginning to settle around his theatre and around the notion of marivaudage that would eventually reduce his legacy too narrowly these twelve volumes preserve a much broader image of the writer: not only a dramatist but also an author of fiction moral prose and social observation whose work cannot be confined to his comedies alone. 1723réf. 89534Paris: Chez la Veuve Guillaume 1723. Fine. ""Almost all of them could be called 'The Surprise of Love'"" Chez la Veuve Guillaume Paris 1723 10.1 x 16 cm relié First edition. Full red morocco binding round spine with five raised bands decorated with gilt fleurons slight rubbing on the caps double frame of blind-stamped gilt fillets on the covers with fleurons at the corners of the inner frame edges slightly blunt marbled paper endpapers and back covers gilt edges and heads very elegant 19th-century binding a la Du Seuil signed Quinet on the first endpaper. Rare first edition of Chamblain de Marivaux's first theatrical success The Surprise of Love published four years before The Second Surprise of Love. This play performed in the spring of 1722 before being published the following year in 1723 already contains all the essence of Marivaux's style all its subtle gallantry. According to the Romantic poet Theophile Gautier it is the author's masterpiece. When the playwright submitted his work to the ""Italian Comedians of His Royal Highness the Duke of Orleans"" who had enjoyed the protection of the regent since 1716 the troupe leader of the ""new Italian Theatre"" the renowned actor ""Ricoboni dit Lelio"" was in the process of moving away from farcical theatre in favour of more accomplished plays. Nineteen performances of Marivaux's works will be played by the Italian actors whose acting style was considered more natural than codified. One actress in particular Giovanna-Rosa Benozzi known as Silvia excelled in this art. She was preferred by her contemporaries ""to the brunette Quinault the blonde Balicourt the beautiful Clairon and the young Gaussin all of them Comédie-Française"" actresses. Her first encounter with Marivaux which turned out to be rather eccentric took place after the premiere of The Surprise of Love and was reported by biographer Gaston Deschamps. The playwright went anonymously backstage to congratulate the great actress. Faced with her unknown admirer Silvia complained that she ""did not fully grasp the subtlety of her role"". Marivaux recited a few lines from his play to which the actress replied with great admiration: ""You are either the devil or the author"". According to the Marquis d'Argenson Marivaux's comedies ""could almost all be called 'The Surprise of Love'"". This slightly ironic assessment nevertheless confirms Theophile Gautier's judgement. Indeed this sixth play by Marivaux is the true matrix of his future work and of the famous marivaudage which would culminate in 1730 with The Game of Love and Chance. A very rare copy in a beautiful a la Du Seuil binding signed by a 19th-century master bookbinder. Chez la Veuve Guillaume hardcover
