1767In 8°; (4), 283, (1) pp. Legatura coeva in piena pelle maculata, difetti al dorso e qualche strofinature. Tagli rossi. Testatine e finalini ornati. Manca l'antiporta incisa.

NB: this half-sheet is original and does not represent an excision as can been seen from the old offsetting of the final page of text. Overall in very good condition. AN EARLY AMERICAN PRINTING OF A WORK OF PATRIOTIC FICTION; OUR COPY WAS OWNED BY A YOUNG WOMAN OR WOMAN BY AT LEAST 1803. THIS NEWBURYPORT EDITION OF THE NOVEL IS UNCOMMON: SINCE 1908 ONLY TWO OTHER COPIES HAVE APPEARED ON THE MARKET. At a time when women were denied the rights of citizenship the text of Marmontel's "Belisarius" was of particular interest to some contemporary feminist authors and activists some of whom utilized its plots to champion human rights as is attested by the 1795 New York play written by Margaretta Faugeres entitled "Belisarius: A Tragedy." The first blank leaf is inscribed "Eliza Gage 1803." This may have been Eliza Gage of Newburyport who was born in 1790 to Jonathan Gage and Susanna Jewett. The present translation follows that of the bilingual text given in the Brussels 1792 edition although no Translator's Preface appears therein. However there is one in the present edition and it seems to have been written by an American. The final sentence reads: "What will still raise your surprise to a great height is to find an author possessed of so strong a sense of liberty born under the French government: he has been since sent to the Bastile as a reward for his most excellent performance." A copy of this Newburyport edition was listed among the fiction books in the Caritat Circulating Library in 1804 for which see G.G. Raddin An Early New York Library of Fiction 1940 p. 82. 1775Best.-Nr. ST16379-050La Haye: Dépens de la Compagnie 1775. A "New Edition" augmented with etchings and anecdotes relating to "Bélisaire. 170 x 100 mm. 6 5/8 x 4". 2 p.l. viii 358 pp. Contemporary sheep-backed speckled boards smooth spine divided into panel by decorative gilt roll red morocco label. With woodcut head- and tailpieces and two etched plates. Front pastedown with a blue piece of paper inscribed with the number "93" and the name Gueveni in ink. Five small wormholes to leather on rear board text with two tiny marginal wormholes becoming one as the book goes along otherwise fine internally--especially clean and fresh in an appealing period binding showing very little wear. First published in 1767 "Bélisaire" is an historical romance based on an apocryphal tale of the estimable Byzantine commander Belisarius in which he is blinded and reduced to penury by an ungrateful Emperor. According to the Oxford Companion the book created a sensation out of proportion with its intrinsic literary merits because it contained a chapter advocating religious tolerance and freedom of opinion which was censured by the Sorbonne. The present edition includes several letters and additional texts that concern this controversy. An author whose talents were employed in several genres Marmontel 1723-99 was encouraged by his mentor and friend Voltaire to venture from the provinces to Paris in order to pursue a literary career. He gained acceptance into fashionable circles distinguished himself as a highly-praised writer for the "Encyclopedie" and was elected to the French Academy in 1763. The present volume is an extremely pleasing copy of an early edition. Dépens de la Compagnie unknown books

Contemporary French mottled sheep extremities worn and bumped; back cover of vol. 2 abraided with loss leather on front hinge quite worn but the board is quite attached marbled pastedowns and endpapers all edges marbled. Text with minor foxing but completely unmarked and unspoiled. NOT ex-library! No copy of this edition has been located despite extensive searching. KVK and FirstSearch list a digital surrogate only but the link wrongly points to a completely different edition Ledentu which consists of 288 332 pages. The two frontispieces in our edition appear to be reverse copies of the illustrations executed by J.M. Moreau le jeune for Lacombe's 1777 edition the first illustrated. The political philosophical and theological significance of this novel is very considerable and Marmontel's text was quickly translated into German English Dutch Italian Russian Swedish and Spanish. Luciano Pellegrini explains its lasting importance and its relevance to modern readers: "'Les Incas' presents a moment of the Conquistadors. Using the knowledge on the subject accumulated over the years and numerous readings Marmontel traces an epic picture of the conquest of Peru by Pizarro and his companions. Not to praise it but to underline its violence and show the monitory end of the empire of 'the most human people in the universe.' . It is a plea against religious fanaticism understood as 'the spirit of intolerance and persecution the spirit of hatred and vengeance for the cause of a God whom one believes irritated and of whom one makes himself the Ministers. . Pizarro remains responsible for the atrocities committed by his men without really sharing them. . One could notice the presence of attitudes of colonial domination in Alonzo de Molina's love for the native Cora. These very real ambiguities are however inseparable from the philosophical commitment of 'Les Incas.' They even touch on the project of universal tolerance carried by Marmontel and largely contribute to the literary quality of a novel which had a success for more than a century."
