The title page features a beautiful decorative woodcut vignette reading: "Essai sur l'Amélioration des Terres. A Paris Chez Durand Neveu. M. DCC LXV. Avec Approbation & Privilège du Roi." Pages are preceded by a famous dedication address to Madame de Pompadour "A Madame de Pompadour. Madame Parmi les Arts qui ont ressenti les effets de votre pro.". While signed by Pattullo this introductory piece on physiocracy and the economic importance of agricultural reform was famously drafted by the Enlightenment writer Jean-François Marmontel at the request of François Quesnay. Condition Notes: Text block is secure and generally clean with light uniform age-toning and very minor spotting. Binding is worn but structurally intact and retains a very authentic period feel. Note: This copy is sold as-is lacking the 3 folding plates often missing from later printings. An essential mid-18th-century agronomy and political economy tract. 1775réf. ST16379-050La Haye: Dépens de la Compagnie 1775. A "New Edition" augmented with etchings and anecdotes relating to "Bélisaire. 170 x 100 mm. 6 5/8 x 4". 2 p.l. viii 358 pp. Contemporary sheep-backed speckled boards smooth spine divided into panel by decorative gilt roll red morocco label. With woodcut head- and tailpieces and two etched plates. Front pastedown with a blue piece of paper inscribed with the number "93" and the name Gueveni in ink. Five small wormholes to leather on rear board text with two tiny marginal wormholes becoming one as the book goes along otherwise fine internally--especially clean and fresh in an appealing period binding showing very little wear. First published in 1767 "Bélisaire" is an historical romance based on an apocryphal tale of the estimable Byzantine commander Belisarius in which he is blinded and reduced to penury by an ungrateful Emperor. According to the Oxford Companion the book created a sensation out of proportion with its intrinsic literary merits because it contained a chapter advocating religious tolerance and freedom of opinion which was censured by the Sorbonne. The present edition includes several letters and additional texts that concern this controversy. An author whose talents were employed in several genres Marmontel 1723-99 was encouraged by his mentor and friend Voltaire to venture from the provinces to Paris in order to pursue a literary career. He gained acceptance into fashionable circles distinguished himself as a highly-praised writer for the "Encyclopedie" and was elected to the French Academy in 1763. The present volume is an extremely pleasing copy of an early edition. Dépens de la Compagnie unknown

Paris & Amsterdam: 1776-77. 5 volumes including the Suite de recueil de planches; Table Analytique. Paris: 1780. Profusely illustrated with engraved plates. Diderot's famous Encyclopedie was initially a modest translation of Chambers's Cyclopaedia. It grew as a project into a massive project which attempted to collect human knowledge from a rationalistic perspective instead of by nature or theology. In organizing knowledge from a position where human reason was paramount the supremacy of the Church was imperiled. As a result the Encyclopedie was widely controversial and placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum by the Catholic Church. In discussing fundamental philosophical issues such as on political authority and natural rights articles in the Encyclopedie shifted the basis of governmental authority from the divine right of Kings to radical concepts popular consent was the basis of legitimacy and the ideals of a social contract. The work was banned by the King of France. It spread the foundational ideas of the French Revolution and enlightenment thinkers. "No encyclopaedia perhaps has been of such political importance or has occupied so conspicuous a place in the civil and literary history of its century. It sought not only to give information but to guide opinion." "It was a war machine; as it progressed its attacks on both the church and still more on despotic government as well as Christianity itself became bolder and more undistinguished and it was met with persecution and opposition unparalleled in the the history of encyclopedias." - Encyclopedia Britannica 11th ed p. 1483. "A monument in the history of European thought; the acme of the age of reason; a prime motive force in undermining the ancien regime and in heralding the French Revolution" Printing in the Mind of Man 200.
