An original French collection of the moral tales and short fables by the French historian Jean-Francois Marmontel illustrated with one detailed plate to each volume. Complete in four volumes. In the original French. Collated complete. Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume I and one plate each bound into Volumes II III and IV. Half-title is present to each volume. Marmontel published this series of moral tales in the official journal 'Le Mercure'. The tales are moral but also have a delicate finish to their writing style and depict the court of Louis XV at Versailles in a charming and graphic manner. They are sentimental stories and were very widely appreciated and popular with the public. Marmontel was a French historian and author. He was a member of the Enclycolpedistes movement and first found literary success with a succession of tragedies that he wrote from 1748 to 1753 including 'Aristomene' and 'Cleopatre'. In a full marbled calf binding. Externally generally smart. Rubbing to the boards and spines with some loss of leather to the front boards of Volumes I and II. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities with a small amount of loss to the head of the spine of Volume II. A small amount of loss to the spine label to Volume II. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd mark and odd spot. Prior owner's ink inscription 'A. Baird' to the head of the title pages of Volumes I and II to the head of the half-titles of Volumes III and IV to the head of page 45 of Volume I head of leaves C6 and E1 of Volume II head of leaf C7 of Volume III and head of leaf C7 of Volume IV. Small closed tear to the tail of leaf H7 of Volume I not affecting text and mark to leaf L6. Small chip to leaf O1 of Volume II not affecting text. Very Good J. B. Garnery hardcover
1773rif. LTH28-D-19London: P. Vaillant & G. Robinson 1773. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7" by 4.5". None. An attractive copy of Jean-Francois Marmontel historical work on the life and times of the Byzantine military leader Belisarius. Translated into English from the original French. Despite writing tragedies and operas in his early career Marmontel became a historian later on in his life and was appointed professor of history at the Lycée in 1786. He was also a member of the French Academy. Later reduced to poverty by the revolution he wrote a memoir which John Stuart Mill credited with curing him of depression. This copy is from the library of Robert Chambré Vaughan and includes his bookplate to the front pastedown.Entitled 'Belisaire' in the original French the work was incredibly controversial. The work made bold comparisons between Belisarius' decline into poverty at the hand of his king Justinian I and the then current French monarch Louis XV and his treatment of his people. Furthermore the French ecclesiastical authorities were angered by the works perpetuation of the the virtues of religious tolerance. These factors resulted in the work being banned in France. Not only a interesting history of this Byzantine military leader this work is also valuable as it touches upon the political climate of 18th century France. In a full calf binding. Externally very smart with just minor rubbing to the extremities of the boards and light shelfware. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown and a contemporary ink signature to the title page. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with only the occasional spot or stain. Very Good Indeed P. Vaillant & G. Robinson hardcover

The original French Bélisaire is a banned 1767 novel on the life of the Byzantine general Belisarius by Jean-François Marmontel 1723-1799. It popularised the apocryphal tale of his being reduced to beggary by Justinian I despite his great services to the empire citing it as an example of the ingratitude of those in power towards their faithful servants and indicting the French king Louis XV by proxy as another such ungrateful monarch. In the Netherlands the translation was received with enthousiasm as well as protest and resulted in a fierce discussion about whether heathens like Socrates could find a place in Heaven. hardcover

Marmontel condemned the violence against the native Americans indigenous people. This plea was not suited in the time of the French monarchy during the ancien regime based on intolerance and intimidation. The archbishop of Paris Mgr. Chrisophe de Beaumont banned the work of Marmontel in 1767. Also in The Netherlands there was a vivid dispute this time on the idea that also non-christians heidenen could join in heaven. This is called the ""Socratische oorlog"".Jean Francois Marmontel 1723-1799 was a French historian writer and member of the Encyclopedistes movement.
