1773réf. LTH28-D-19London: P. Vaillant & G. Robinson 1773. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7" by 4.5". None. An attractive copy of Jean-Francois Marmontel historical work on the life and times of the Byzantine military leader Belisarius. Translated into English from the original French. Despite writing tragedies and operas in his early career Marmontel became a historian later on in his life and was appointed professor of history at the Lycée in 1786. He was also a member of the French Academy. Later reduced to poverty by the revolution he wrote a memoir which John Stuart Mill credited with curing him of depression. This copy is from the library of Robert Chambré Vaughan and includes his bookplate to the front pastedown.Entitled 'Belisaire' in the original French the work was incredibly controversial. The work made bold comparisons between Belisarius' decline into poverty at the hand of his king Justinian I and the then current French monarch Louis XV and his treatment of his people. Furthermore the French ecclesiastical authorities were angered by the works perpetuation of the the virtues of religious tolerance. These factors resulted in the work being banned in France. Not only a interesting history of this Byzantine military leader this work is also valuable as it touches upon the political climate of 18th century France. In a full calf binding. Externally very smart with just minor rubbing to the extremities of the boards and light shelfware. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown and a contemporary ink signature to the title page. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with only the occasional spot or stain. Very Good Indeed P. Vaillant & G. Robinson hardcover

The original French Bélisaire is a banned 1767 novel on the life of the Byzantine general Belisarius by Jean-François Marmontel 1723-1799. It popularised the apocryphal tale of his being reduced to beggary by Justinian I despite his great services to the empire citing it as an example of the ingratitude of those in power towards their faithful servants and indicting the French king Louis XV by proxy as another such ungrateful monarch. In the Netherlands the translation was received with enthousiasm as well as protest and resulted in a fierce discussion about whether heathens like Socrates could find a place in Heaven. hardcover

A "New Edition" augmented with etchings and anecdotes relating to "Bélisaire. 170 x 100 mm. 6 5/8 x 4". 2 p.l. viii 358 pp. Contemporary sheep-backed speckled boards smooth spine divided into panel by decorative gilt roll red morocco label. With woodcut head- and tailpieces and two etched plates. Front pastedown with a blue piece of paper inscribed with the number "93" and the name Gueveni in ink. Five small wormholes to leather on rear board text with two tiny marginal wormholes becoming one as the book goes along otherwise fine internally--especially clean and fresh in an appealing period binding showing very little wear. First published in 1767 "Bélisaire" is an historical romance based on an apocryphal tale of the estimable Byzantine commander Belisarius in which he is blinded and reduced to penury by an ungrateful Emperor. According to the Oxford Companion the book created a sensation out of proportion with its intrinsic literary merits because it contained a chapter advocating religious tolerance and freedom of opinion which was censured by the Sorbonne. The present edition includes several letters and additional texts that concern this controversy. An author whose talents were employed in several genres Marmontel 1723-99 was encouraged by his mentor and friend Voltaire to venture from the provinces to Paris in order to pursue a literary career. He gained acceptance into fashionable circles distinguished himself as a highly-praised writer for the "Encyclopedie" and was elected to the French Academy in 1763. The present volume is an extremely pleasing copy of an early edition. Dépens de la Compagnie unknown books
