Dezember 2016 ebenda war ein senegalesischer Bildhauer. Ousmane Sow verließ 1957 bis 1965 seine Heimatstadt Dakar um in Frankreich zu studieren und erlangte Diplome als Krankenpfleger und Physiotherapeut. Von 1968 bis 1984 lebte er wieder in Frankreich und kehrte anschließend nach Dakar zurück um eine physiotherapeutische Praxis zu eröffnen. Ousmane Sow sah Fotos von Leni Riefenstahl die 1975 einige Monate bei den Nuba die damals noch unbeeinflusst von Fortschritt und Zivilisation waren im Südsudan fotografiert und gelebt hatte. Beeindruckt von den Fotos dieser Menschen beendete er seine Karriere als Physiotherapeut verwendete seine anatomischen Kenntnisse und machte die Bildhauerei zu seinem Beruf. Seine anatomisch detaillierten und oft in Bewegung festgehaltenen Skulpturen brachte er ohne Modelle hervor. Als Autodidakt entwickelte Sow neue Techniken. Zwischen 1984 und 1987 schuf er Die Nuba eine Figurengruppe von muskulösen virilen überlebensgroßen Nuba-Ringern. 1988 folgten die Serien Die Massai 1991 Die Zulus und 1993 Die Peulh. 1992 wurden Werke von Ousmane Sow auf der documenta IX ausgestellt und 1999 auf der Pont des Arts in Paris. 1998 entstand die Serie Die Schlacht am Little Bighorn aus der 2003 mehrere Werke auf der Ausstellung The american effect im Whitney Museum of American Art zu sehen waren. 2008 erhielt Sow den Prinz-Claus-Preis. 2013 wurde Ousmane Sow Mitglied der Académie des Beaux-Arts» Wikipedia. 010 Paris, Revue noire, 1995 unknown

Collection of early photographs of North-Africa and the Middle East by several photographers who had worked in the region. The main part of this collection consists of carte de visite portraits by Wilhelm Hammerschmidt ca. 1830-1869 from the 1860s. Most of them show Egyptians including a porter carrying a large chest on his back and a blind man. Three outdoor photographs show a group of men one holding a pipe almost as long as himself a camel rider and two camels in profile. Two larger photographs by the firm of Pascal Sébah from Istanbul date from the 1870s or 1880s and show a caravan halting in the desert. Of later date is the single image by the photographic duo Lehnert & Landrock who worked in Tunis in 1904-1914. Their picture which was popularly used in picture postcards shows a small group overlooking an oasis near Tripoli. The largest and most artistic photograph is by the Swiss firm Schroeder & Cie and dates from the 1880s. This striking image shows the Mosque of Muhammad Ali in Cairo with the crumbling remains of a rock and wall acting as repoussoir and a figure at the front watching from the shade. A strange stowaway in this collection is a single carte de visite by the Italian photographer Enrico Van Lint 1829-1882 of "Galileo's Lamp" the bronze lamp which Vincenzo Possenti created after a drawing by Leon-Battista Alberti in 1587 for the Pisa Cathedral.With 4 of the cartes de visite labelled on the back and one stamped with a name; the paper of the Sebáh photograph with an inscription in English and the Schroeder with an inscription on the back. Some of the sheets or cards on which the photographs are mounted are somewhat tattered at the edges and the cartes de visite have probably been trimmed. Pascal's Pensées is one of the great theological works in history a seminal example of Christian apologetics and a classic of French literature. Writing amid the explosion of Cartesian rationalism Pascal emphasizes an intuitionist-style approach to religion while at the same time outlining one of the best-known rational arguments for religious belief - the wager. Writing early in the book Pascal observes that regardless of one's actual beliefs the very notion of God requires one to take a loaded gamble on his existence: "ouy; mais il faut parier" p. 56. At his death in 1662 Pascal left behind bundles of fragmentary notes for an inchoate book of Christian apologetics. The proper order of these notes has been debated for centuries but this edition contains the arrangement devised by his executors and particularly his sister Gilberte who had previously published a biography of her illustrious brother. A "pré-originale" printing of this first edition with a title page dated 1669 is known in two surviving copies and was an advance issue likely for circulation to Pascal's associates and to gain approbations.
