Publiser's original pale bloue cloth spines gilt-decorated with foliated motifs and gilt lettering upper covers likewise lettered in gilt. Frontispiece and title vignette to each volume six folding plates of facsimile letters in Vol.1 two additional plates in Vols. 2 & 4 head- and tail-pieces throughout. Inner hinges to Vol.1 partially cracked some light shelfwear along joints and to extremities of spines some occasional light foxing and damp generally a very good set in the bright original cloth bindings. The Fordham edition was produced to lighten Poe's dark mysterious image with the reading public. It was first issued in 1884. This is the second issue published in 1896 which enhances the appearance of the books with the gilt decorative scrolling to the spines. This second issue is also the first to include the essays and memoirs by Richard Henry Stoddard. Richard Henry Stoddard was an American critic and poet. He was a major figure in New York and is arguable one of the most knowledgeable experts on Edgar Allan Poe. London: George Routledge & Sons, Limited, 1896. hardcover
