A scarce early 19th-century printing of the four popular pseudo-Aristotelian manuals on procreation gestation and childbirth signed by Henry Poole with the mysterious inscription "from a lady." This Henry Poole of London was likely the Henry Poole from 1814-1876 from the prominent Poole family of London clothiers who would later establish Henry Poole & Co. on Savile Row tailors to royalty and the British elite. In 1831 he would have been approximately 17 years old a young gentleman from a respectable well-connected family. His ownership of this provocative text is particularly intriguing given his family's social standing.a young gentleman in 1831 when he inscribed this volume a provocative choice for the era as these texts contained frank discussions of human sexuality reproduction and childbirth that remained shocking to Georgian and early Victorian sensibilities. The inscription suggests this may have been a clandestine gift perhaps from a lover or confidante adding intrigue to an already controversial work. Cocker, Harris, and Finn hardcover

rif. 71099Brepols 2026. Hardback clxvii 45 pages Size:178 x 254 mm Languages: Latin English Greek. ISBN 9782503621654. Summary Aristotle's De longitudine et brevitate vitae is a natural philosophical treatise on the factors influencing lifespan in plants and animals. It became accessible to Latin scholars in the medieval West by means of its first Greek-Latin translation. This translation also known as the translatio vetus was made by James of Venice in the first half of the twelfth century. Being part of a collection called the Corpus vetustius James's translation of the treatise circulated widely especially during the thirteenth century. The present volume offers the first critical edition of James's translation of De longitudine et brevitate vitae including Greek-Latin and Latin-Greek indices. The edition is preceded by both an in-depth examination of the known Latin manuscript tradition in its entirety and a penetrating inquiry into the translation's relation to the Greek tradition of the treatise as we know it today. The 112 extant Latin manuscripts go back no further than the thirteenth century. They reveal that James's translation has been subject to desperate contamination and textual corruption. The Greek model used by James is now lost. This model however must have been very closely related to the Greek treatise as transmitted in a few extant manuscripts dating from the fourteenth century.
