1992rif. 2349430New York: Penguin Books 1992. Reprint. Trade Paperback. Fine. 0x5x7. Reprint. Brand new from publisher. 1992 Trade Paperback. lxxiii 1 61 1 pp. Translated into English from the original Greek with introduction and notes by Malcolm Heath. Essential reading for all students of Greek theatre and literature and equally stimulating for anyone interested in literature. In the Poetics his near-contemporary account of classical Greek tragedy Aristotle examine the dramatic elements of plot character language and spectacle that combine to produce pity and fear in the audience and asks why we derive pleasure from this apparently painful process. Taking examples from the plays of Aeschylus Sophocles and Euripides the Poetics introduced into literary criticism such central concepts as mimesis 'imitation' hamartia 'error' and katharsis which have informed serious thinking about drama ever since. Aristotle explains how the most effective tragedies rely on complication and resolution recognition and reversals while centring on chaaracerts of heroic stature idealised yet true to life. One of the most perceptive and influential works of criticism in Western literary history the Poetics has informed serious thinking about drama ever since. Malcolm Heath's lucid translation makes the Poetics fully accessible to the modern reader. In this edition it is accompanied by an extended introduction which discusses the key concepts in detail and includes suggestions for further reading. Penguin Books paperback books

The first collected English translations of Aristotle's works from Orphic fragments by Neoplatonist scholar Thomas Tyler 1758-1835. Provenance of famed bibliophile and collector Frances Mary Richardson Currer whose well-curated and respected library expanded to nearly 20000 volumes. Bibliographer Thomas Frognall Dibdin remarked that she was "the head of all female book collectors in Europe." Known for her philanthropic endeavors she donated a sum of 50 pounds to Patrick Bronte father of Charlotte Bronte when he was widowed in 1821. Currer also contributed an unknown amount to the Clergy Daughter's School that the Bronte sisters attended. "Rome underwent a spectacular transformation under Fascist rule; a transformation that was visual and topographical but also deeply symbolic. The 'third Rome' that Mussolini envisioned and sought to realise in the 1920s and 1930s was partly a new city expanding in all directions from the historic centre and partly a new vision for an ideal city that emerged from within a cityscape forged across millennia of history. This Rome was intended to be both the capital of a regenerated Italy and the sanctuary of a new international fascist political religion. Aristotle Kallis traces the plethora of visions and projects that sought to reimagine reinvent and reshape the city as a 'fascist capital' over the course of twenty short years. Extensive demolitions reconfigurations of sites and monuments as well as ambitious new constructions designed by an array of architects in wildly different styles chronicle a fascinating story of conquering drive ruthless appropriation and interrupted ambition" -- rear cover. Aquinas the philosopher is forever entwined with Aristotle as the former came onto the scene just as the Aristotelian corpus arrived in Latin translation and questions of the relation between faith and reason challenged the modus vivendi that had been in effect for centuries." Beth Mortensen summarizes the significance of the text: "All of us living in this Cartesian age grow accustomed to thinking of our bodies as animated machinesmachines that function better or worse subject to innumerable material factors. De Anima On the Soul reminds us that the human person is one whole and the soul is actively making the body what it is. This means that among other things the quality of the bodys functioning does not determine a human beings 'quality of life' and it is completely irrelevant to that persons worth or dignity." see: aquinas institute - commentary on de anima. 1520rif. 14721Augsburg: Grimm & Wirsung 1520. Printed throughout in Roman letter of various sizes and mostly in double columns. First title page in red and black; heraldic woodcuts on second and third titles devices initials and text diagrams throughout. Final leaf with large woodcut of Saint Catherine on colophon is in facsimile on contemporary paper. Old vellum new endpapers; occasional stains and a few wormholes. This edition of Aristotle’s scientific works on the motion of heavenly bodies his physics meteorology on the process of birth and generation and on the soul of man was brought together by Johann Eck 1486-1543 and here first printed in Augsburg by Grimm and Wirsung. This is also the first time the beautiful heraldic woodcuts were used. Research suggests that the artist could be Hans Burgkmair who worked in Augsburg at the time the book was printed. Another source indicates the woodcuts could be by the “Petrarca-Master” or that Books 2 and 3 were done by Hans Weiditz. See F. 1783rif. 10489Paris: Chez la Veuve DeSaint 1783. FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH. Including half-titles approbation and privilege du Roi. Volume I with the Greek and French translations on facing pages. Contemporary tree calf some wear to joints and corners; marbled edges some light waterstains in first volume. From the library of George Milton Smith with his bookplate.`. First edition. Camus' translation of Aristotle's descriptive zoology from Greek into French is a masterpiece of scholarship. This highly esteemed translation is much sought after for its extensive erudite commentaries and profound enlightenment of comparative anatomy. Divided into two books the first volume contains Aristotle's original Greek with Camus' French translation facing. Here he documents all the various manuscripts editions and translators cited in the work. The second volume a detailed study of natural history up to the modern time contains Camus' careful observations on the commentaries of other translators. This work is of particular importance for Camus' nomenclature of those living creatures originally described in Aristotle's account. He lists all of the animals found in Aristotle works including those "fanciful and primitive" and then details the differences in terms of the modern knowledge of natural history. So great was the influence of Aristotle that his teachings and thought were accepted and enlarged upon for nearly two millennia. He was acquainted with more than five hundred species of animals and had dissected and investigated in detail at least fifty kinds ranging over the entire animal kingdom. Many of his conclusions have stood the test of time. Among them may be mentioned his descriptions of the mechanisms of locomotion of the process of digestion in ruminants of the habits of bees of the mechanism of animal reproduction; his exposition of analogous structures in living bodies; and his methods of biological classification Eimas Heirs of Hippocrates 14. Camus 1740-1804 French revolutionist was a successful advocate before the Revolution. In 1789 he was elected by the third estate of Paris to the states general and attracted attention by his speeches against social inequalities. He was named archivist to the Constituent Assembly and in that capacity he organized the national archives and classified the papers of the different assemblies of the Revolution. He was restored to the office in 1796 and became absorbed in literary work. He remained an austere republican refusing to take part in the Napoleonic regime. This scarce work was included in Thomas Jefferson's library. Chez la Veuve DeSaint unknown books
