Best.-Nr. 66733London: John Stockdale 1792. FIRST EDITION. 4to. 28.5 x 22.5 cm. pp. xvi564ix. Tree calf boards spine with raised bands and gilt lettering. Corners rubbed and bumped hinges and edges rubbed light scuffing to boards; frontis torn and repaired with light toning last page with some toning and offsetting. Very good overall. An amended edition of Pye's 1788 translation of the Aristotle's Poetics including a commentary based on extracts from contemporary English literature tying the sentiments and arguments of the ancient philosopher to those of the modern day Englishman. His aim as he states in his preface is to make Aristotle's works clear and comprehendible to readers of English and of English poetry. This is Pye's only work of translation. Most of his efforts were directed towards the composition of prose plays and poetry the latter winning him the position of Poet Laureate from 1790 until his death in 1813. Pye also served the nation as Member of Parliament for Berkshire between 1784 and 1790. London: John Stockdale, 1792. hardcover
