1864réf. 941London: John Churchill and Sons New Burlington Street 1864. First edition. This is a scarce statistical and epidemiological dermatological study by Erasmus Wilson one of the most eminent British dermatologists of the nineteenth century published in 1864 by John Churchill and Sons. Rather than a general textbook of classification and treatment this work is a focused empirical inquiry: Wilson sets out to establish the relative frequency typical duration and underlying cause of various skin diseases as deduced from his own clinical observation of one thousand consecutive cases - an unusually data-driven and quantitative approach to dermatological research for its period predating the widespread adoption of large-scale case-series methodology in British medicine. The work is further distinguished by its inclusion of specific remarks on the exanthematous rash-producing epidemic that occurred in the spring of 1864 giving the book real value as a primary historical source documenting a specific contemporary disease outbreak as observed and analyzed by a leading practitioner of the day. Condition & Binding: This copy has been rebound in plain grey paper-covered boards with a brown cloth spine evidently a later library or collector rebinding with a neat printed paper label affixed to the front board reading "ON DISEASES OF THE SKIN - E. WILSON." The binding itself is clean sturdy and free of significant wear presenting as a tidy functional rebind rather than the original ornamental publisher's cloth. Internally the text block shows light-to-moderate age-toning with some scattered foxing and spotting particularly to the title page along with minor edge wear and a small chip to the lower corner of the title leaf though the text remains fully complete and legible throughout. Overall- very good. John Churchill and Sons, New Burlington Street unknown

1847réf. 934London: John Churchill Princes Street Soho 1847. Second edition. Erasmus Wilson's On Diseases of the Skin is one of the most influential and widely used dermatological textbooks of the mid-nineteenth century and this second edition 1847 represents an important early printing of a work that would go through numerous editions over the following decades and help establish Wilson as one of the foremost British dermatologists of his generation. Wilson a Fellow of the Royal Society and lecturer in anatomy and physiology at the Middlesex Hospital School of Medicine built on the classificatory foundations laid by Willan and Bateman earlier in the century offering a systematic and pedagogically clear treatment of cutaneous disease that made the book a standard reference for practitioners and students alike. The two epigraphs on the half-title - from Gibert "a method an order a systematic classification is indispensable to the thorough knowledge of Cutaneous Pathology" and Boerhaave - signal Wilson's own emphasis on rigorous methodical classification as the foundation of dermatological practice. This particular copy carries notable institutional provenance: the title page bears the ink/blindstamp of "BIBLIOTH. COLL. REG. MED. EDIN." the Library of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh together with the College's caduceus-and-shield device stamped beneath and an old shelf-mark label "K.2.3." affixed to the spine - confirming the volume's history as a working reference text within a major Scottish medical institution's library before deaccessioning. Condition & Binding: This copy is bound in the original publisher's brown cloth boards with a blind-stamped decorative border and central medallion design and a gilt-lettered spine reading "DISEASES OF THE SKIN - WILSON - LONDON JOHN CHURCHILL" along with the old institutional shelf-mark label. Condition is worn consistent with a book that saw genuine use in an institutional medical library: the spine cloth is significantly chipped cracked and lifting at both the head and tail with loss of covering material exposing the spine structure beneath and the front board shows separation/splitting along the front joint with some fraying to the cloth at that hinge. The text block itself remains sound and complete with typical light age-toning to the leaves and no major losses to the text. Overall- poor to fair. . John Churchill, Princes Street, Soho unknown
