1878réf. 958London: J. & A. Churchill New Burlington Street 1878. Lectures on Dermatology is a first edition 1878 collection of lectures delivered by Erasmus Wilson F.R.S. F.R.C.S. before the Royal College of Surgeons of England across the 1876 1877 and 1878 sessions. Wilson was one of the most prominent and influential dermatologists of Victorian Britain and this volume - covering his final three courses of lectures - focuses specifically on chromatopathic affections disorders of skin pigmentation/color epidermic affections including tinea/ringworm favus and versicolor onychopathic affections diseases of the nails the physiology and pathology of the hair system including excessive hairiness baldness and greyness and the gland system covering encysted tumours cutaneous horns acne rosacea sycosis and related conditions concluding with diseases of the perspiratory and sweat-gland systems. As Wilson explains in his preface these lectures complete a broader six-part series covering the whole of skin disease with pathology serving as the foundational organizing principle for his classification and treatment recommendations throughout. Condition & Binding: The book is bound in the publisher's original maroon cloth boards with gilt-lettered spine reading "Lectures on Dermatology 1876-7-8 / Erasmus Wilson / London J. & A. Churchill" along with a later paper shelf label "616 / W69.4" and "v.3". However the spine cloth is significantly torn and chipped at both the head and tail with the sewing structure and cords visible and exposed at the joints; the front board along with the title page and the following leaf bearing the preface conclusion and table of contents is now fully detached from the text block and the spine is only barely attached with visible fraying loose threads and separation along the hinge. The rear board and pastedown bearing the Duhring bookplate and University of Pennsylvania stamps remain more securely attached but the volume as a whole is structurally compromised and should be handled with care or housed in a protective enclosure. Internally the text block itself is complete clean and legible with only light even age-toning; the detached leaves are present and undamaged apart from being loose. Overall- poor. J. & A. Churchill, New Burlington Street unknown
