Lightly rubbed and marked chipping to head and foot of spine light staining to boards. Ink-stamp of W. M. Titus to head of FFEP leaves lightly browned. The first American edition of an unusual financial novel set inside the London Stock Exchange published under the pseudonym of Erasmus Pinto by an unknown author who has been tentatively identified as 'Latham Smith'. In the preface the author ridicules the titular 'Outside Fools' who spectate and gamble on the work of the honest 'brother brokers' blaming the public's ignorance on the lack of 'wide-spread knowledge of the way they work'. The novel serves as the author's attempt to illuminate and exonerate the 'humble' broker from the loan- mongering tyrannical financiers of industry by broadening this knowledge and questioning the reader's own integrity: 'Suppose you had a family to keep and knew that if you did not work your own employers' will some hundreds would be glad to step into your shoes pray would you find it easy to resist'. . First American edition. 8vo. Lovell, Adam, Wesson & Company hardcover
