1730ref. 7551Prostant venales apud J. Brotherton ad Insigne Bibliorum Sacrorum in Vico Cornhill 1730. 8vo. First and Sole Edition thus on laid paper text in Latin with several fine woodcut head- and tail-pieces some slight age-staining mainly marginal more pronounced on a handful of leaves; contemporary marbled boards very neatly rebacked in calf to style back with four raised bands second compartment with red leather label lettered in gilt a remarkably fresh crisp clean copy. First published in 1535 the 'Ecclesiastes' is Erasmus' last and longest work a detailed treatise on preaching and the offices and duties of priesthood. O'Malley deems it 'a major monument - perhaps the major monument - in the history of sacred rhetoric. Its only rival is the De Doctrina Christiana of Augustine' Erasmus and the History of Sacred Rhetoric: The Ecclesiastes of 1535.Bray's extended 25pp introduction begins in typically exuberant fashion - 'Jesu & Omnia!' dedicating the printing to Edmund Gibson Bishop of London 1669-1748 and Edward Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield. Erasmus' famous preface revealing his responses to the deaths of More Fisher Wareham and Mountjoy is given in full. Thomas Bray 1656-1730 Commissary of Maryland and founder of SPCK did much to spread abroad knowledge of significant religious works. 'It was a great service to the cause of Christian knowledge' undertaken for no reward and with 'unspeakable labour and fatigue'.Rare. Prostant venales apud J. 1535ref. 150907Antwerp: Michael Hillenius 1535. Rare 16th-century English blind stamped panels One of two pirated editions of Erasmus's Ecclesiastes published in Antwerp the same year as Froben's authorized original. The covers of this copy bear two handsome and rare blind stamped panels attributed to the Dutch binder Gerard or Garrett Pilgrim active in England at the beginning of the 16th century. Pilgrim was a native of Antwerp who worked as a bookseller and bookbinder in Oxford from at least 1524 until his death in 1536. The two panels of which only 13 examples are known to Oldham Oldham HM 17 and 18 p. 28 all dated 1523-35 are of characteristically English style and manufacturing. They feature an outer frame filled with blind stamped rolls of leaves garlands angels masks and dragons and a central design of heads in roundels accompanied by the binder's initials with a key and a pilgrim's staff crossed. On 12 July 1536 Erasmus died in Basel where he had returned to check on Froben's publication of the Ecclesiastes his last major composition. This work is an extensive manual in four books on the art of preaching containing a treatise on the role and importance of preachers in the church precise indications on how to structure and deliver sermons and a list of sermon topics. The Ecclesiastes was highly successful: in addition to the 2600 copies printed by Froben two pirated editions were produced in Antwerp in 1535 the present one and another by Martinus Caesar for an estimated total of 3500 copies sold - an uncommonly large publication for its time see Kleinhans p. 308. Small 8vo. With an architectural woodcut border on the title page 7 decorated metalcut initials 5 woodcut headpieces 7 woodcut tailpieces and a woodcut printer's device at the end of the work. Scarce early edition of an influential manual on preaching. It was one of the last major works which Erasmus produced and is considered one of his most significant treatises on theology. The work was incredibly popular in his own time as Erasmus had been pressured for many years to write it. The present edition which is the first by Montanus and the third authorised edition is relatively scarce however with only two other copies recorded in sales records of the 21st century."The Ecclesiastes is really a collection of three works: a theological treatise on the importance of preaching and the role of the preacher in the church Book I a textbook on homiletics and hermeneutics which provides the preacher with the basic tools necessary for both the interpretation of scripture and the construction and delivery of sermons based on biblical terms Books II and III and a list of sermon topics with an explanation of how some of them should be developed. From this organization it is clear that Erasmus attempted to provide his contemporaries with both a theology of preaching and clear and precise advice on the art of preaching" Kleinhans. With 18th-century annotations on the front pastedown and in the margins of some of the leaves several portions of text are underlined. The edges and corners of the boards are somewhat scuffed the vellum is somewhat soiled and stained. The work is somewhat browned throughout with brown ink stains on a few leaves affecting a few words minor loss of material in the lower margin of a7 and a8 without affecting the text. Ownership inscription of J. Edmonds Oxford. Scarce in jacket. Very good. "The first American publication of a thirty-odd year old portrait of Erasmus Darwin grandfather of the famous Charles and great three times grandfather of author Pearson the last probably accounting not only for the intimacies involved but also the reverence indulged in. Darwin was 18th century England's physician par excellence George III wanted him but didn't get him; Darwin was too democratic; he was also a philosopher a poet and head mandarin of the Lunar Society whose celebrated enclave held Watt of the steam engine Wedgwood of pots and Priestley of oxygen. Darwin was a stutterer who looked twice his age; nevertheless his sallies never missed nor was his sexual appetite ever starved. Twice married and many more times a father his home was a happy one; a failing though- grumpy disapproval of all things spiritual- cost him a son a wistful lad who ended it all at the bottom of the River Derwent. Pearson's style here- it has changed since then- is pretty much drawing-room English comfortably ensconced with wit and stage-bearded with wisdom. The hyperbole of course gets heavy-handed: was Darwin really the progenitor of eugenics aeroplanes submarines psychoanalysis That he was the "parent of Creative Evolution" one can doubt a doctrine made unfashionable ironically enough by his grandson. Put it all down as a bunched-together biography- incidents anecdotes character studies-which in its fustily fastidious way is fascinating. And if Darwin as a personality doesn't emerge as engaging as he was intellectually extraordinary well one can't have everything especially all in one family." Kirkus Reviews. J. M. 1518ref. ABC_49875Cologne: Johann Gymnic 1518. Modern faux-leather-patterned paper with a grey paper label on the spine with the authors name lettered in silver Erasmus v. Rotterdam. 4to. With the title set with in a frame built up from 4 or possibly 6 woodcut illustrations including printer's initials and the date 1518 and 10 woodcut decorated initials. Selection of three letters by the Church Father Jerome of Stridon Saint Jerome ca. 342/47-420 CE edited and annotated by Erasmus. Erasmus felt a profound connection to Jerome. He saw in the ancient Church Father not only a kindred spirit but also a mirror for his own intellectual and spiritual journey. Included in this volume are three letters: first the epistle to Heliodorus on the praise of the solitary life de vita solitaria a stirring defence of ascetic withdrawal from the world; second the epistle to Heliodorus on the misery of human life de miseria vitae humanae a sombre reflection on the fleeting nature of earthly existence; and third the epistle to the monk Rusticus on avoiding familiarity with women de mulieribus evitandis a warning shaped by both monastic ideals and Jeromes personal convictions. Additionally a short fourth letter addressed to Onasus is included at the end of the volume though it does not appear on the title page. In this letter he satirically addresses the priest Onasus who had a deformed nose and his feeling of being unjustly attacked and being made a fool of in other letters and writings by Jerome. With early manuscript annotations corrections etc. of the printed text in the margins and occasional underlining of the text mainly concerning the third letter written in three different hands in both brown and black ink. With a 0.5 cm worm hole in the gutter margin not affecting the text. Occasional foxing and browning and some water staining in the fore-edge margin of several leaves. 1529ref. 3896Coloniae Köln: apud Ioannem Gymnicum Johann Gymnich I 1529. First Gymnich edition. Later paste-paper wrappers. Tinted edges. Title page with ink blot obscuring an early blind ownership stamp. Later manuscript annotation to the second leaf. Very good condition. First Gymnich edition. Later paste-paper wrappers. Tinted edges. ff. 39. A rare Cologne edition from Johann Gymnich's ambitious Augustinian publishing programme issued in the wake of Erasmus's Froben edition of Augustine. Issued in September 1529 the present edition belongs to Johann Gymnich's remarkable programme of Augustinian publications in Cologne. Between 1528 and 1533 he published sixteen editions representing fourteen different Augustinian works eight of them in 1529 alone. This publishing programme coincided with the appearance of Erasmus's monumental ten-volume edition of Augustine's Opera printed by Johann Froben at Basel between 1528 and 1529. While the Froben edition offered Augustine's complete works in an ambitious scholarly edition Gymnich issued individual treatises in inexpensive convenient format making them available independently of the costly collected Opera. By 1528 the first volumes of the Erasmian edition were already on the market and the enterprise was completed only in June 1529 a few months before Gymnich published the present work. Comparison with the contemporary Froben edition shows that Gymnich's De moribus was not conceived as an independent editorial undertaking. Adapted for publication as a separate treatise it prefixes the relevant extract from Augustine's Retractationes and employs a different system of chapter arguments while the text itself closely follows that of the contemporary Basel edition. Whether Gymnich worked directly from the Froben printing or from another witness of the same recension remains uncertain but the close chronological relationship between the two publishing programmes strongly suggests that Gymnich's Augustinian series was conceived in the context of the renewed demand generated by Erasmus's edition. Written shortly after Augustine's conversion De moribus ecclesiae catholicae is one of his earliest anti-Manichaean treatises. Addressed principally against the Manichaeans it defends the moral teaching and ascetic ideals of the Catholic Church while setting them against those of its rival. . apud Ioannem Gymnicum [Johann Gymnich (I)] unknown
