1682ref. 42963Amstelodami Amsterdam: Henricum & Viduam Theodori Boom 1682. Hardcover. Very Good. Desiderius Erasmus is reported to have been born in Rotterdam on 28 October in 1466. He was given the highest education available to a young man of his day in a series of monastic or semi-monastic schools. In 1492 poverty forced Erasmus into the consecrated life. He took vows as a canon regular at the canonry of Stein in South Holland and was ordained to the Catholic priesthood at about the age of 25 but he never seemed to have actively worked as a priest The popularity of his books is reflected in the number of editions and translations that have appeared since the sixteenth century." See Wikipedia. 503 pages in Latin including Epistola Ad Christianiss Regem Gallorum Franciscum I and index. Bound in original vellum with lettering on the spine. Penciled notes and owner's signature on the front endpapers. Vellum and text block edges moderately soiled and just a few pages with a hint of moisture else an about very good tight copy. Ottimo esemplare Tutta pergamena, pp. 8, 589, 3, in 16°

'Erasmus' Familiar Colloquies grew from a small collection of phrases sentences and snatches of dialogue written in Paris about 1497 to help his private pupils improve their command of Latin. Twenty years later the material was published by Johann Froben Basel 1518. It was an immediate success and was reprinted thirty times in the next four years. For the edition of March 1522 Erasmus began to add fully developed dialogues and a book designed to improve boys' use of Latin and their deportment soon became a work of literature for adults although it retained traces of its original purposes. The final Froben edition March 1533 had about sixty parts most of them dialogues. It was in the last form that the Colloquies were read and enjoyed for four centuries. For modern readers it is one of the best introductions to European society of the Renaissance and Reformation periods with lively descriptions of daily life and provocative discussions of political religious social and literary topics presented with Erasmus's characteristic wit and verve.' -- Craig Thompson introduction to the Colloquies volume of Erasmus's Collected Works.
