Daed here using Jisc from copies helf at the University of Oxford Libraries and the National Library of Wales. A remarkable collaborative detective novel by fourteen leading members of the Detection Club including Agatha Christie Dorothy L. Sayers G. K. Chesterton and Anthony Berkeley among others. Each chapter was written by a different author who was required to develop the mystery while accounting for the clues and complications introduced by their predecessors The novel follows Inspector Rudge's investigation into the mysterious death of a man discovered in a rowing boat near the sleepy seaside village of Whynmouth. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally generally smart. Spine faded; slight fading to extremities. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities more so to spine ends and corners. First Edition of the first French translation of this interesting work situated at the crossroads of enlightment literature travel accounts and feminism. Abandoned by her husband with whom she had had 7 children Lady Craven asked for a divorce and left England to travel. The account of her journey published in London in 1789 was written in English under the form of letters addressed to the Margrave of Anspach - her future husband. She describes her travels through France Italy Russia and Crimea to Constantinople and back to England through Bulgaria Romania and Austria. This edition published by Maradan with the supposed address of London seems to have been published without authorization a few months before the authorized edition which was translated by the bookseller and published at his own shop by official permission. This curious example of editorial piracy demonstrates how successful the work became when issued in England. Folding map of Crimea placed in front of the title-page and 6 large folding plates printed on strong paper. Nice copy with the engraved exlibris of Louis Montandon.
