Abstract: "A program has been developed for the IBM 709 digital computer to handle many of the problems encountered in the optical design of high-energy particle beams. The program employs a six-dimensional vector space that takes into account the position and direction in both planes perpendicular to the beam direction chromatic aberrations and particles of different mass. The quadropole problem with one or two degrees of freedom i.e. one or two singlets a doublet or a symmetric triplet is solved for the field gradients necessary to yield given beam conditions. The vectors are evaluated at the end of each element in the system. Effects higher than first-order with the exception of second-order chromatic aberrations in the quadrupoled are not included. The effect of apertures is calculated in terms of the limitations on the phase-space volume that can be transmitted by the system. Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory unknown

ref. 24510No dates or places. A friend of Horace Walpole she was described by Boswell after a dinner with her and Dr Johnson as ‘the beautiful gay and fascinating Lady Craven’. See her entry in the Oxford DNB. The three items are laid down with eight other items see the end of this description on pieces of paper cut down from two leaves of an album. Somewhat discoloured with age but in fair overall condition. The recipient or recipients of the second and third letters laid down on the same piece of paper are not named although the third is written to a member of her ‘fishing gentry’. All three letters are signed ‘Elizabeth’. The second letter contains a reference to her son Keppel Richard Craven 1799-1851 who has his own entry in the Oxford DNB. ONE: Dated ‘Tuesday’. Begins: Dr. Mrs. Roe - / I’ll thank you to see in Newbury if thers sic any fine sort of flannel - Look at them as for yourself - if you can get me some Patterns - I’ll call this Evening between Six & Seven - if you know of any good Mantua Maker - & appoint her about that hour - it is something I want made for Miss Bentham - I hope you caught no cold last night’. TWO: Begins: ‘I have not had Time to thank you for the Piano - which is Dumb. Keppel is around in London - & I may Expect him any moment - & my niece Arundell - if we are not all Killed by the Thunder’. She ends by stating that she will be glad to see the receipient ‘whenever you can come to me’. THREE: Reads: ‘I am oblig’d to go to Southampton to Consult Hacket being very unwell - I return tomorrow - I have told Major Roper who remains here with his Daughter that my fishing gentry were to Come & so he will receive you as if I was at Home’. On the reverse of the piece of paper which the first letter is attached to are laid down eight items including a note in the third person by ‘Lord Redesdale on Batsford Park letterhead the 1866 signature of Lord Rollo two fragments with signature of Lord Lifford and the front of a letter said to be addressed in the autograph of Agnes Strickland. ref. 24508No place. 'Saturday 5 Mar 14 i.e. 1814. 1p 8vo. On laid paper with watermarked date 1811. In good condition lightly aged with stub from mount adhering. In a contemporary hand at head: '0 15' and at foot '5 Mar 14' and 'Margravin Anspach'. The letter reads: 'The Pye alluded to is Calld Paté de Peregeux & must be spelt so The other is – Je detruit Par ma presence - I destroy by my presence - indeed Sir you cannot Oblige me more than to be very minute in any thing that seems doubtfull - The Black Stone perhaps may suit the Pye being filld with Black Trufles – but there is a Place calld Peregeux in France from whence was sent to all Parts of the World those Pyes - Hopeing C. Jairman will not walk off with C – Barclay - I remain yours sin Elizabeth.' The letter certainly relates to the following passage in Lady Craven's 'Memoirs' regarding 'Lord Thurlow when Chancellor': 'I really believe he preferred tough English salt beef to a pate de Perigueux — and the London porter to the wine of Paris. He frequently remarked to me " Vous detruisez par votre presence" .'. From the nature of the letter it would appear to be a reply to a query made on preparing the manuscript by the publisher of the 'Memoirs' Henry Colburn of New Burlington Street. If that is the case the dating to '5 Mar 14' would appear to be incorrect as the 'Memoirs' were published in 1826. No place. 'Saturday | 5 Mar 14 [i.e. 1814] unknown
