1716ref. 1277391716. First Edition. LORD GREY OF WERK BERKELEY Henrietta. The Trial of Ford Lord Grey of Werk et al.É For Unlawful Tempting and Inciting the Lady Henrietta BerkeleyÉ to Unlawful LoveÉ with an Intent to Cause Her to Live in a Scandalous Manner. London: J. Morphew 1716. Slim octavo period-style full paneled calf raised bands red morocco spine label. $2000.First edition of the verbatim transcript of this sensational 17th-century trial in which Lord Grey was charged with seducing the under-18-year-old sister of his wife ""with an intent to cause her to live in a scandalous manner with the said Lord Grey."" Handsomely bound. The prosecution of this scandalous case was ably handled by George Jeffreys; the defense was equally capable and the verbatim transcript of the proceedings vividly portrays the case's high emotional charge. ""In 1682 Lady Henrietta became a well-known figure of scandal when still a minor and under 18 following the revelation of her love affair with Ford Grey Lord Grey of Warke 1655-1701 the husband of her elder sister Mary. The intrigue seems to have begun in 1681 and continued for about 14 months before it was discovered by Lady Henrietta's motherÉ Eventually the earl of Berkeley launched a lawsuit for unlawful seduction against Grey and his accomplices which was brought before the court of king's bench on 23 November 1682. Henrietta herself appeared at the trial but with her evidence the lord chief justice told her 'You have injured your own reputation and prostituted both your body and your honour and are not to be believed' State trials 9.176. As the court was breaking up the earl attempted to take his daughter away with him whereupon Henrietta announced that she was married to William Turner Grey's servant. A scuffle broke out in the courtroom as she refused to return home and her father tried to seize her by forceÉ The trial attracted a great deal of publicity and the story of Lady Henrietta's affair with her brother-in-law became the inspiration for Aphra Behn's Love Letters between a Nobleman and his Sister the first part of which was published in 1684"" ODNB. Bound with half title. Old ink annotations to verso of half title; small duplicate stamp to final text leaf.Only occasional faint foxing to text. Fine condition handsomely bound. hardcover books

From his two-room office Updke wrote to Morris on August 3 1893. The manuscript archives of Updike correspondence in the Huntington Library reveal no further exchange between them. Very good copy. Former owner's name-stamp Clifford J. Maloney on wrappers. First Edition Offprint Issue. The first published paper on the commercial application of electronic / electromechanical computing in private industry outside of the telephone company. Drawing on material that he would later publish in his famous Giant Brains or Machines that Think 1949 Berkeley described the four large-scale computing machines then in operation-MIT's Differential Analyzer; Harvard's Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator; the Moore School's ENIAC; and Bell Laboratories' Relay Calculator-and discussed the machines' information-processing capabilities and their potential uses in the insurance industry. "It is natural to call these machines mechanical or electronic brains and to speak of them as machinery that thinks. This new machinery is certain to have far-reaching effects in all fields where the handling of information is the bulk of the work. . . . Much of the material in this paper is taken from a forthcoming book on the subject by the present writer and is used by special permission of the publisher" p. 36. Berkeley a seminal figure in the history of modern computing was introduced to computing using punched-card machine methods while working as an actuary at Prudential Insurance. In 1942 he joined the Navy and was assigned to the Harvard Computation Laboratory where he worked with Howard Aiken on the Harvard Mark II. In 1946 Berkeley returned to Prudential where he helped create a prototype premium billing trial for the Harvard Mark I and participated in studies that led to Prudential's purchase of one of the first UNIVAC I computers. He also began working on Giant Brains and in 1947 founded the Association for Computing Machinery. In 1948 he left Prudential to found his own company and in 1951 he began editing and publishing Computers and Automation later renamed Computers and People the first periodical specifically devoted to computing. He also headed his own publishing firm consulted for industry and invented and sold several build-it-yourself electronic computers and small robots Simon Squee Tyniac Brainiac etc. as educational tools. In his later years he became known as the conscience of the computer industry through his often-expressed belief that computers should be used not for military or destructive purposes but only for the benefit of society. . unknown books

Hardcover. a very nice copy of a book that notoriously does not wear well especially the dust jacket which in this instance has only some minor edgewear and a few surface-scratches on the rear panel. B&W photographs A detailed extensively illustrated chronicle of Berkeley's film and stage work published when he was still alive to enjoy it and able to dedicate the book sweetly to his wife Etta. His sixth and last wife if you must know: B.B. was a heavy drinker and not the easiest guy to live or work with. The Foreword is by Ruby Keeler who danced for Berkeley in four of his most famous films -- 42ND STREET GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933 FOOTLIGHT PARADE and DAMES -- and starred in the 1971 Broadway revival of "No No Nanette" for which he was "production supervisor" a largely honorary role. He was originally hired to direct and choreograph the show but was then in his seventies and had been largely inactive since the mid-1950s and wasn't up to the demands of the job.
