E. Jessop A Bibliography of George Berkeley no. 121c.SYNOPSISWritten principally during Berkeley's residence in Rhode Island between 1729 and 1731 Alciphron was conceived as a response to the growing influence of freethinking deism and religious scepticism in eighteenth-century intellectual life.Presented as a series of conversations between Alciphron Lysicles Euphranor and Crito the dialogues address the nature of virtue the existence of God the reliability of human understanding and the relationship between religious belief and society.Through Euphranor Berkeley advances his distinctive philosophical arguments challenging sceptical interpretations of morality and experience while defending Christianity on rational and philosophical grounds. The accompanying New Theory of Vision extends the intellectual importance of the set beyond religious controversy into the study of optics perception and the philosophy of mind.
