rif. 24508No place. 'Saturday 5 Mar 14 i.e. 1814. 1p 8vo. On laid paper with watermarked date 1811. In good condition lightly aged with stub from mount adhering. In a contemporary hand at head: '0 15' and at foot '5 Mar 14' and 'Margravin Anspach'. The letter reads: 'The Pye alluded to is Calld Paté de Peregeux & must be spelt so The other is – Je detruit Par ma presence - I destroy by my presence - indeed Sir you cannot Oblige me more than to be very minute in any thing that seems doubtfull - The Black Stone perhaps may suit the Pye being filld with Black Trufles – but there is a Place calld Peregeux in France from whence was sent to all Parts of the World those Pyes - Hopeing C. Jairman will not walk off with C – Barclay - I remain yours sin Elizabeth.' The letter certainly relates to the following passage in Lady Craven's 'Memoirs' regarding 'Lord Thurlow when Chancellor': 'I really believe he preferred tough English salt beef to a pate de Perigueux — and the London porter to the wine of Paris. He frequently remarked to me " Vous detruisez par votre presence" .'. From the nature of the letter it would appear to be a reply to a query made on preparing the manuscript by the publisher of the 'Memoirs' Henry Colburn of New Burlington Street. If that is the case the dating to '5 Mar 14' would appear to be incorrect as the 'Memoirs' were published in 1826. No place. 'Saturday | 5 Mar 14 [i.e. 1814] unknown

1945rif. 26074New York NY: Not Published 1945. A group of 40 letters and cards; correspondence between a young man and a woman friend who he met and worked with at the Jewish summer Camp Achvah; he later became a student at UC Berkeley. He had also attended the Jewish Camp Cejwin. Mostly the letters are from Edwin Finkelstein to his friend Natalie Levy back in New York with a couple of notes to him from her. The Achvah material is mostly camp gossip and scuttlebutt regarding the owners of the camp who according to the writer took advantage of the counsellors and workers: ".Concerning your job. You will have the same job and privileges as a regular counsellor. That is you will have the same hours curfews time off and days off. In regard to a bonus don't make me laugh last year only one person got a bonus.a whole $ 5. The only reason he got it was because his father did legal work form Mr. Barshad.Don't get involved in any counsellor uprisings.be good to your kids and you will get good tipslast year a good percentage of the girls were willing to go out on strike with the boys." Edwin F. works at Steve Cohen Boys' Camp in Hopewell Junction NY 1946 and writes of his work and play there during that summer; he continues to ask about and advise about Camp Achvah where Natalie is a summer counsellor. He notes that ".Achvah is a dump compared with this placehere were are treated like humans not like dirt." Nevertheless there is a great feeling of camaraderie among those who attend and work at the camps many reunions and get-togethers over the years. The last group of 6 letters are from UC Berkeley and the difficulties of coursework and enjoyments of attending that school and living in California. NOTE: ".In the 1920s and 1930s a recognition began to arise that the summer camp might play a significant role in Jewish education and the socialization of the Jewish child into Judaism. Samson Benderly the first director of New York's Bureau of Jewish Education was the first to recognize the unique opportunity that the summer camp offered for teaching modern Hebrew and other traditional Jewish values through immersing children in a Hebrew and Judaic environment. In 1927 he opened Camp Achvah the first Hebrew-speaking camp in Arverne on New York City's Rockaway peninsula. In 1932 he sought to expand the program and purchased a campsite in a rural setting in upstate Godeffroy New York. The expanded program retained the intensive Judaic program but was not Hebrew speaking as had been the program at the Arverne site." ref. Encyclopaedia Judaica 2007 "Jewish Camping" article. Other social and political events are remarked upon in the letter content for instance the high school student strikes and riots in the boroughs of NYC in 1945 which required police intervention and mention of a similar race related riot in Bergen College New Jersey regarding a disqualified black football player. Most letters with their mailers & cancellations intact; some age-wear and soiling; contents clean and in very good condition. . Manuscript. Not Bound. Very Good. Not Published paperback books

1750rif. 175832London: for J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper 1750. Presented to and initialled by the Enlightenment thinker George Berkeley First edition presentation copy to the idealist philosopher George Berkeley inscribed by the Countess of Burlington on the initial binder's blank "To the Bishop of Cloyne from his most humble servant D. Burlington" and with Berkeley's ownership initials George Cloyne to the title page. Dorothy Countess of Burlington 1699-1758 was the granddaughter of Halifax a leading statesman of Charles II's time. She owned several manuscripts from Halifax which were edited here for publication by Alexander Pope. She was one of Queen Caroline's Ladies of the Bedchamber a patron of artists including David Garrick and Handel and a portrait painter. Berkeley was first introduced to her husband by Alexander Pope and he became close friends with them. Berkeley wrote to the Countess to thank her for the volume: "Madam Permit me to thank your Ladyship for a present very valuable in it self and much more so on account of the giver who is so good as to remember an humble servant in this remote corner; where to my sorrow I am haunted with a taste for good company and fine arts that I got at Burlington house the worst preparative in the world for a retreat at Cloyne" 2 April 1750. The volume came into the possession of the bookseller and bibliographer John Stephens 1948-2006 and has his bookplate. Stephens identified the letter and sourced a photocopy from Chatsworth House which had the original the photocopy is included as is a letter from Chatsworth sending it. He published an article on the volume and its presentation "Berkeley and Lady Burlington: A Footnote" in Berkeley Newsletter Number 12 1992 pp. 16-17. He quoted the letter and commented: "It is a rather sad letter: he may then have been depressed but worse was to happen. In February 1751 his son William died and the following October his friend Thomas Prior followed. The next year he sailed for England never to return to Ireland. Berkeley shared Burlington's interest in architecture but he had certainly not been in Burlington House since he had last been in London in 1734. It has very much the tone of someone pleasantly surprised that he should be remembered after so long an absence". Octavo 199 x 120 mm pp. 8 183 1. Contemporary mottled calf rebacked with black morocco label later double gilt rule to covers marbled endpapers red speckled edges. Bookplate to front pastedown of British modernist architect Marshall Sisson 1897-1978 alongside his pencilled signature and notes on the book on the front free endpaper verso. Covers a little worn with patches of calf infill superficial split to front inner hinge some light foxing to contents still a very good copy. ESTC T130907. unknown
