2012réf. 361840Running Press 2012. 1st. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Hardcover 272 pages. MAD Magazine was an indispensable part of 'growing up' for 1950s/60s kids. The humor was witty leg-pulling and hilarious. The art work to this day was of the highest order. Top cartoonists such as Jack Davis Don Martin Bob Clarke etc. graced it's pages for many years. Top of the rank must be Mort Drucker whose caricatures of film and TV stars are second-to-none. Some of his very best work dating from 1957 to 2009 is included in this hefty volume. The reproductions are slightly larger than the magazine format and excellent for studying the line-work of this remarkable artist. Included is a fascinating discussion between Mort and former MAD editor Nick Meglin. Record # 361840 Running Press hardcover

1860réf. 3220383Chromolithograph panorama 8.8 x 296 cm on five conjoined strips; folding down into the original black cloth covers 9.1 x 11.2 cm. Rare and attractive if rather disconcerting tourist souvenir panorama of the Dance of Death. The panorama contains 43 separate scenes and is a reproduction of the 63 metre-long fresco painted on the inner wall of the cemetery of the Augustinan Convent Basel c.1440. that was possibly created under the influence of the plague epidemic of 1439. The sequence emphasises the vanity of social distinctions each character dancing with death. The wall and fresco were demolished in 1805 however a number of fragments survive in the Historisches Museum Basel. Identifications of the subjects is given in the bottom margin in French English and German. The English identifications read from left to right: Preacher Charnel House Pope Emperor Empress King Queen Cardinal Bishop Duke Duchess Earl Abbot Knight Lawyer Alderman Canon Doctor Nobleman Lady Merchant AbbessCripple Hermit Young Man Maiden Minstrel Herald Judge Headsman Jester Pedlar Blind Man Jew Pagan Paganess Cook Peasant Painter Painter's Wife Paradise and The Dance of Death. As a tailpiece a view of Todlenanz as it appeared in 1800. The panorama is derived from a watercolour copy by the still life painter Johann Rudolf Feyerabend 1779-1814 that was completed in 1806 and is also housed in the Historisches Museum Basel. [Basel?]

Very uncommon juvenile work from Scotland about which scant information is to be found. The story concerns Mabel Minnie and Mona two schoolgirl friends and their archenemy who develop and undertake a mission to educate the poor children of the miners living in the row houses down by the pit. The idea is to use gentler methods of introducing Christianity at which the local missionaries and curates have failed: "We will take lessons from them and try to avoid what seems to have been their great mistake - injudiciousness; and perhaps showing a little too plainly that they considered them heathen and were determined to convert them at any cost." The book contains themes of friendship and antagonism philanthropy and stewardship faith and hope. However perhaps most interestingly the story explores death and loss as the young protagonists first grapple with the passing of a miner's wife from consumption. SPOILER ALERT Then Mabel becomes ill and Minnie must provide her and others hope as the young girl dies from fever due to a ruptured blood vessel. OCLC locates perhaps 3 physical copies of this rare book for the young 19th century reader. . John S. Marr and Sons unknown
