Full transcription reads New York Oct. 24 1855 Madam It is my painful duty to inform you of the death of your son James who sailed in the Brig S.B. Hill. He was swept overboard from the Brig when five days out by the sail striking him. As soon as the Captain heard that he was overboard he threw ropes to him but he did not take hold of the rope. They then put a spar overboard and the Capt. had to speak sternly to him to get him to take hold of the spar while they cut the boat loose but before the boat got out he sank to rise no more. His clothes you can get by calling by office. Respectfully Yours Geo. Walsh 39 Burling Slip. unknown books
