The two volumes result of the fruitful collaboration between our two Institutions present through 107 papers the latest research in the field of Medieval and Modern period Mediterranean Pottery. The keynote lecture offers a synthesis of the progress realized in the past twenty years on glazed ceramics not only in a scientific but also in a practical and social level. The articles are not limited to the presentation of typology and new excavation material but they proceed mainly with a more holistic view of pottery studies and try out synthetic approaches. Organized in five thematic areas they travel us from Portugal to Northern Russia from Algeria to Palestine for a period covering not less than fifteen centuries from the 6th century AD to 1988. They deal with issues of typological evolution distribution and trade ideological and political changes reflected on pottery fabrics and firing technologies new methods of analysis and dating new online tools; they also present older or new unpublished excavations and impressive shipwrecks. Reading these volumes one realizes the important progress that our community of pottery specialists has made in recent years towards a more substantial more dynamic presence in all places and all times from the early Middle Ages to the Modern period .IMPORTANT: The shipping cost is an important parameter of this order; it is NOT included in the price and depends on the actual weight and destination; you will have to approve it after the confirmation of the order. The title page is particularly attractive with a finely engraved view of the Sheldonian Theatre the Oxford University printing house from which the book was issued.Institutional and modern auction catalogues attribute the editing of the 1711 Symposia to Henry Aldrich. Aldrich died in December 1710 making this one of the classical works associated with his scholarship to appear immediately after his death. An early nineteenth-century auction catalogue unusually records the edition as a Fairfax; the precise basis and identity behind that attribution have not been established and Fairfax is therefore not retained here as a co-editor.The present copy is preserved in an appealing contemporary panelled calf binding and is distinguished by an important manuscript provenance from the Oxford classical milieu of the 1740s.PROVENANCEVery probably Edwin Sandys 17261797 later 2nd Baron Sandys; acquired in 1747 as a gift from his very dear friend Ant. Champion very probably Anthony Champion 17251801The front flyleaf bears the early ink inscription:Ed: Sandys 1747 Ex dono amici charissimi Ant: Champion approximately From the gift of my very dear friend Anthony Champion. The Ed: Sandys is very probably Edwin Sandys 17261797 later 2nd Baron Sandys of Ombersley. Sandys matriculated at New College Oxford on 21 May 1743 aged seventeen and became a notable classical scholar and bibliophile. He was later appointed a trustee of the British Museum and records made at his death attest to a substantial personal library. The attribution is supported by comparison with securely provenanced books from Sandyss library including a 1746 Oxford presentation volume now held by New College Library. The abbreviated form Ed: Sandys the formation of the name and the date of the present inscription are closely consistent with material associated with Sandys during precisely this period of his life. The donor recorded as Ant: Champio - For full description please contact the seller Sheldonian unknown
