Jacket now in Brodart for preservation. A good strong hardcover copy. Previous owner's name neatly penned to the ffep gutter of Prof John Michelsen dept of Philosophy at UVic. Text is clean. 'There are innumerable translations of Plato's Republic into English the Jowett and the Cornford being the best known. But Professor Allan Bloom's version will be the only available translation which attempts to be strictly literal. . . Moreover he is convinced that the Platonic dialogues are written on several levels and that the text is never as simple and straightforward as it seems at a cursory glance. He has therefore provided those of us who do not read Greek with the closest translation of the original that has yet been published in English in order that we can come to our own interpretations rather than be dependent on the translator's incomplete interpretation. In addition to the text itself there is a rich and invaluable interpretive essay - as well as indexes and a glossary of terms - which will better enable the student to approach the heart of Plato's intention.' Translated with Notes and Interpretive Essay by Allan Bloom. 2nd Printing 1968. xx487 pages. Photos available upon request. Basic Books Hardcover

1826rif. D32Well-worn leather-bound set complete in 11 volumes. 1826. Fair. All covers worn; significant fading to gilt spines cover decorations and marbled edges. Spine beginning to detach from volume one. All volumes lack leather spine labels except VII. Sporadic notes and marginalia throughout the set as well as light foxing. This is a mixed set as volume three was acquired independently: its leather is darker and it has library bookplates to front pastedown and front flyleaf. 1968rif. 148529New York: The Limited Editions Club 1968. The Limited Editions Club signed limited edition of Plato’s dialogues on love and friendship. Octavo bound in full modern morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands gilt ruling to the front and rear panels all edges gilt gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers with black and white illustrations. Boldly signed by illustrator Eugene Karlin on the colophon page at the rear. One of 1500 numbered copies this is number 511. In fine condition. Translated from the Greek with introductory analyses by Benjamin Jowett. Preface by Whitney J. Oates. Illustrated by Eugene Karlin. Plato’s 'Dialogues on Love and Friendship'—comprising Lysis Symposium and Phaedrus—offer a philosophical exploration of the nature purpose and transformative potential of human relationships. In Lysis Plato raises fundamental questions about the essence of friendship ultimately leaving the concept unresolved thus inviting continued reflection on the basis of interpersonal bonds. The Symposium presents a series of speeches culminating in Socrates’ recounting of Diotima’s teaching which elevates erotic love eros from physical desire to a philosophical longing for eternal truth and beauty. In Phaedrus love is portrayed as a form of divine madness that when rightly guided leads the soul toward recollection of the Forms and a higher understanding of the self. Together these dialogues construct a nuanced vision of love and friendship as ethical and metaphysical forces that can either enslave or liberate the soul depending on their alignment with reason and the pursuit of the good. 1833rif. 6321New York: W. Gowan 1833. Very good. 2092pp. 12mo. Original boards cloth spine; printed paper label. Corners worn and bumped head and foot of spine chipped and worn label rubbed. Contemporary ownership inscription on front flyleaf. Light foxing. Untrimmed. First American edition of Plato's Phaedon originally from a run of 2500 copies and the first edition of any of Plato's works to be published in the United States. It was translated from the Greek by Andre Dacier though attributed on the title page to Madam Anne Lefevre Dacier. Stoddard notes that in some copies the dedication to Washington Irving appears on p.3 with the Advertisement printed on its verso. In this copy the dedication is omitted and p.3 contains the Advertisement with a blank verso. The evidence thus points to two distinct states with no priority given. According to the Dictionary of American Biography this is the publisher's first output. The ownership signature J.W. French is likely that of John W. French an Episcopal clergyman and educator and later West Point chaplain. He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford in 1832 and subsequently from General Theological Seminary in New York City. Renowned for his scholarship in Greek Latin and moral philosophy this work would naturally have been of interest. A handsome copy in original unsophisticated condition. W. Gowan unknown

1962rif. 148539New York: The Limited Editions Club 1962. The Limited Editions Club signed limited edition of this collection of four dialogues written by Plato recounting the death of Socrates. Octavo bound in full modern morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within raised bands top edge gilt gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers with color illustrations. Boldly signed by illustrator Hans Erni and printer Giovanni Mardersteig of Verona at the Officina Bodoni on the colophon page at the rear. One of 1500 numbered copies this is number 437. In fine condition. Translated from the Greek with introductory analyses by Benjamin Jowett. Preface by Huntington Cairns. Illustrated by Hans Erni. Plato’s The Trial and Death of Socrates is a foundational text in Western philosophy that explores the ethical and political implications of Socrates' final days. Comprising four dialogues—Euthyphro Apology Crito and Phaedo—the work examines the nature of justice the role of the individual in society and the immortality of the soul. In Apology Socrates defends his philosophical mission as a divine duty challenging the moral complacency of Athenian society. Crito presents a powerful argument for obeying the law even in the face of injustice while Phaedo offers a vision of death as a release of the soul to a higher realm. Together these dialogues portray Socrates not only as a martyr for truth but also as a model of rational integrity whose commitment to philosophy transcends the fear of death. 1928rif. 2110270037Modern Library 1928-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. 7x4x1. Signed. Flat signed Alexis Leger and Felix Morley and 7 other authors and scholars on half title page. Hardcover and dust jacket. Tears to jacket with loss. Dust jacket in protective mylar cover. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Small stain to edge. xlviii 577 p. 19 cm. Autographed by Alexis Leger Felix Morley A.D. Emmant James Kern Feibleman Francis S. Haserot and others. "Alexis Saint‐Leger Leger 1887-1975 was a triple image. As Alexis Leger he was a professional French diplomat of impressive suavity and limited accomplishment. As himself he was a gracious aristocrat who preferred his own company to the glitter of the salon. As St.‐John Perse pronounced SIN‐jin he was a major poet of candescent belief in the indestructibility of humanity. The Nobel Prize only confirmed the rapturous regard Mr. Perse's peers expressed for him as one of the most original of contemporary poets. His audacious use of pungent imagery and arcane symbolism set him apart as did his celebration of the inexhaustible power of life to triumph over disaster His language was ambiguous lyric and cadenced studded with subtle metaphors and sprinkled with delicate melodies more discernible by the ear than the eye. Among poets writing in English Archibald MacLeish T. S. Eliot and Louise Varese were drawn to Mr. Perse and influenced by him." NY Times Obit. "Felix M. Morley 1894=1982 was an educator and journalist who won the Pulitzer Prize. Mr. Morley won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing in 1936 three years after he was named editorial page editor of The Washington Post. In his career he was president of Haverford College and the first correspondent in China for The Baltimore Sun. He was a brother of the author and poet Christopher Morley who died in 1957. Felix Morley who held a doctorate in political science and was the author of seven books on economics and politics was born in Haverford Pa. His family moved to Baltimore in 1900. He was graduated in 1915 from Haverford College. In 1915 Mr. Morley went to Europe and became an ambulance driver for the British Red Cross. He returned to the United States a year later to become a reporter for The Philadelphia Ledger. In 1917 he became a Washington correspondent for the United Press news agency. Two years later he won a Rhodes scholarship and studied for two years at Oxford after which he studied at the London School of Economics on a Hutchinson Research Fellowship. Several years later he won a Guggenheim Fellowship to study the organization of the League of Nations. In 1922 Mr. Morley joined The Baltimore Sun working in several Far East bureaus and in 1925 becoming the newspaper's first correspondent in China. He left The Sun in 1929 complaining that H.L. Mencken was exercising 'excessive influence' on editorial policy. From 1929 to 1931 he was director of the Geneva office of the League of Nations Association of the United States. After serving as president of Haverford College from 1940 to 1945 Mr. Morley returned to journalism working as a Washington correspondent for Barron's Weekly a position that he held until retiring from full-time newspaper or magazine work in 1954." - NY Times Obit.
