To stimulate student discussion and comparison For reference Lincoln's address at Gettysburg is included in an appendix. Translations are in English including introduction and notes as well as literary and historical commentary. -- AUTHOR: Jud Herrman is Assistant Professor of Classical Studies at Allegheny College. -- FROM THE INTRODUCTION: "Throughout the fifth and fourth centuries BC at the close of each campaign season the Athenian state honored its war-dead in a public burial ceremony choosing a prominent orator to give the keynote address. This volume collects all of the surviving state funeral orations from classical Athens. Like tragedy these speeches present an image of an idealized Athens. The narratives of past Athenian glories found in these speeches feature many of the same mythical tales that were also presented on stage. Like many of the plays the funeral orations emphasize important themes such as Athenian unity their aid to suppliants and their willingness to drive away foreign invaders to protect the other Greeks. The selective version of more recent history found in the funeral orations also highlights these same qualities by focusing on the role of Athens during the Persian Wars 490-479 when the city helped save the other Greeks from invading foreigners and by passing over other events such as the Peloponnesian War 431–404 in which Athens opposed fellow Greeks. Although nearly all of the surviving Greek tragedies are set in the distant mythical past the significant exception is Aeschylus’ Persians the audience in the theater would recognize aspects of contemporary Athens in the depiction of ancient Athenian heroes such as Theseus. The funeral orations draw similar connections more explicitly by presenting a continuous narrative tying the present generation with the great heroes of long ago." -- with a bonus offer--; 520-Herrm; Thucydides Gorgias Lysias Plato Menexenus Demosthenes and Hyperides; with Herrman Judson Translation Introduction notes Commentary Athenian Funeral Orations ; Translations are in English including Introduction notes and literary and histori . 2003. 1585100781 . The title page is particularly attractive with a finely engraved view of the Sheldonian Theatre the Oxford University printing house from which the book was issued.Institutional and modern auction catalogues attribute the editing of the 1711 Symposia to Henry Aldrich. Aldrich died in December 1710 making this one of the classical works associated with his scholarship to appear immediately after his death. An early nineteenth-century auction catalogue unusually records the edition as a Fairfax; the precise basis and identity behind that attribution have not been established and Fairfax is therefore not retained here as a co-editor.The present copy is preserved in an appealing contemporary panelled calf binding and is distinguished by an important manuscript provenance from the Oxford classical milieu of the 1740s.PROVENANCEVery probably Edwin Sandys 17261797 later 2nd Baron Sandys; acquired in 1747 as a gift from his very dear friend Ant. Champion very probably Anthony Champion 17251801The front flyleaf bears the early ink inscription:Ed: Sandys 1747 Ex dono amici charissimi Ant: Champion approximately From the gift of my very dear friend Anthony Champion. The Ed: Sandys is very probably Edwin Sandys 17261797 later 2nd Baron Sandys of Ombersley. Sandys matriculated at New College Oxford on 21 May 1743 aged seventeen and became a notable classical scholar and bibliophile. He was later appointed a trustee of the British Museum and records made at his death attest to a substantial personal library. The attribution is supported by comparison with securely provenanced books from Sandyss library including a 1746 Oxford presentation volume now held by New College Library. The abbreviated form Ed: Sandys the formation of the name and the date of the present inscription are closely consistent with material associated with Sandys during precisely this period of his life. The donor recorded as Ant: Champio - For full description please contact the seller Sheldonian unknown

The Italian translation was prepared by the physician Panfilo Florimbene of Frossombone who based his work on a Greek source text. He dedicated the translation to the Florentine nobleman Francesco Clementi accompanying it with a lengthy and important dedicatory letter. To aid comprehension Florimbene provided an Argument before each book summarizing the key teachings of the corresponding dialogue Bongi I 454. ref. elala3432Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey 1769. First Edition in French translated by Jesuit priest Jean Nicolas Grou 1731-1803 of Plato’s last work left uncompleted at his death. As opposed to the ideal state described in his Republic the Laws presents a practical plan for a ‘second best’ constitution and state. “Under it the elite may possess modest estates and private families are allowed. The lower ranks of society now have some political rights and powers though careful regulations ensure that they will not attain political control. The rulers though decently educated are not required to be philosophers. The women are not warriors. Much of the Laws is a sort of Blue Book in which detailed rules and regulations are laid down for the conduct of elections legal proceedings religious ceremonies markets schools and irrigation…In its concrete legal social and administrative prescriptions…students of Greek history and politics can find a good deal of interest. For inevitably Plato sometimes copies and often just improves on laws regulations codes customs and expedients already obtaining in Athens or other Greek states. Political actualities can be read through Plato’s political recommendations…”.
