2003réf. 2350065New York: Penguin Books 2003. Trade Paperback. Fine. 7x5x0. Brand new from publisher. An exceptional copy. 2003 Trade Paperback. xliv 256 pp. Translated by Hugh Tredennick and Harold Tarrant with introduction and notes by Harold Tarrant. "The trial and condemnation of Socrates 469-399 B.C. on charges of heresy and corrupting the minds of the young forms one of the most tragic episodes in the history of Athens in decline. Plato chose to set the four works of this volume despite their different subjects in the context of the events leading up to Socrates' execution. Euthyphro and Crito are typical Socratic dialogues showing the pungency of his mind in addressing the question of man's relationship with the gods and with society. The Apology is Plato's version of Socrates' speeches at his trial -- a brilliant and humorous manifesto for a life guided by self-responsibility though deliberately doomed to failure as a legal defence. In Phaedo Plato develops his own philosophy out of Socrates' calm confidence in the face of death." Includes: Chronology; Preface; General Introduction; Further Reading; A Note on the Texts; Euthyphro - Holiness: Socrates in Confrontation; Apology - Justice and Duty i: Socrates Speaks at His Trial; Crito - Justice and Duty ii: Socrates in Prison; Phaedo - Wisdom and the Soul: Socrates about to Die; Postscript: The Theory of Ideas in the Phaedo; Notes; Index. "Plato 428/427 BC - 348/347 BC was a Classical Greek philosopher mathematician writer of philosophical dialogues and founder of the Academy in Athens the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Along with his mentor Socrates and his student Aristotle Plato helped to lay the foundations of natural philosophy science and Western philosophy. Plato was originally a student of Socrates and was as much influenced by his thinking as by what he saw as his teacher's unjust death. Plato's sophistication as a writer is evident in his Socratic dialogues; thirty-five dialogues and thirteen letters have traditionally been ascribed to him although modern scholarship doubts the authenticity of at least some of these. Plato's writings have been published in several fashions; this has led to several conventions regarding the naming and referencing of Plato's texts. Although there is little question that Plato lectured at the Academy that he founded the pedagogical function of his dialogues if any is not known with certainty. The dialogues since Plato's time have been used to teach a range of subjects including philosophy logic rhetoric mathematics and other subjects about which he wrote. 1999réf. 2349364New York: Penguin Books 1999. Reprint. Trade Paperback. Fine. 0x5x8. Modern reprint of 1999 edition 13-digit ISBN. Brand new from publisher. An exceptional copy. xlvi 89 1 pp. Translated into English from the original Greek by Christopher Gill. A fascinating discussion on sex gender and human instincts as relevant today as ever. In the course of a lively drinking party a group of Athenian intellectuals exchange views on eros or desire. From their conversation emerges a series of subtle reflections on gender roles sex in society and the sublimation of basic human instincts. The discussion culminates in a radical challenge to conventional views by Plato's mentor Socrates who advocates transcendence through spiritual love. The Symposium is a deft interweaving of different viewpoints and ideas about the nature of love - as a response to beauty a cosmic force a motive for social action and as a means of ethical education. Set immediately prior to the trial and execution of Socrates in 399 BC Theaetetus shows the great philosopher considering the nature of knowledge itself in a debate with the geometrician Theodorus and his young follower Theaetetus. Their dialogue covers many questions such as: is knowledge purely subjective composed of the ever-changing flow of impressions we receive from the outside world Is it better thought of as "true belief" Or is it as many modern philosophers argue "justified true belief" in which the belief is supported by argument or evidence With skill and eloquence Socrates guides the debate drawing out the implications of these theories and subjecting them to merciless and mesmerising criticism. One of the founding works of epistemology this profound discussion of the problem of knowledge continues to intrigue and inspire. Penguin Books paperback books
