'There are innumerable translations of Plato's Republic into English the Jowett and the Cornford being the best known. But Professor Allan Bloom's version will be the only available translation which attempts to be strictly literal. . . Moreover he is convinced that the Platonic dialogues are written on several levels and that the text is never as simple and straightforward as it seems at a cursory glance. He has therefore provided those of us who do not read Greek with the closest translation of the original that has yet been published in English in order that we can come to our own interpretations rather than be dependent on the translator's incomplete interpretation. In addition to the text itself there is a rich and invaluable interpretive essay - as well as indexes and a glossary of terms - which will better enable the student to approach the heart of Plato's intention.' Translated with Notes and Interpretive Essay by Allan Bloom. 2nd Printing 1968. xx487 pages. Photos available upon request. Basic Books Hardcover

2023rif. BIBHB0024881022023. Hardcover. New. About the book: Socrates' quote demonstrates his humility and acknowledgment of his limited knowledge. In Plato's ""Republic"" Socrates delves into the concept of justice and envisions an ideal state that shares women children and property communally. Through dialogues they contemplate an ideal community governed by reason where the tangible world imperfectly mirrors the realm of Forms. Plato also examines the conflict between poetry and philosophy leaving a lasting impact on the culture and philosophy of history. About the Author: Plato the ancient Greek philosopher born in Athens around 428/427 or 424/423 BC established the Academy a school where he taught the principles of Platonism. Renowned for his pioneering use of written dialogue and dialectic methods in philosophy he made significant contributions such as the Theory of Forms and the notion of Platonic love. Throughout more than two millennia Plato's works have had a profound impact on world culture and philosophy leaving a lasting legacy.
