Plato 428/427 or 424/423b 348/347 BC was a philosopher in Classical Greece and the founder of the Academy in Athens the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. He is widely considered the most pivotal figure in the development of philosophy especially the Western tradition. Unlike nearly all of his philosophical contemporaries Plato's entire uvre is believed to have survived intact for over 2400 years. Plato was the innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms in philosophy which originate with him. Plato appears to have been the founder of Western political philosophy with his Republic and Laws among other dialogues providing some of the earliest extant treatments of political questions from a philosophical perspective. Plato's own most decisive philosophical influences are usually thought to have been Socrates Parmenides Heraclitus and Pythagoras although few of his predecessors' works remain extant and much of what we know about these figures today derives from Plato himself. A HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK AND the best translation of Plato into English. Jowett was a great favorite at Oxford University and most famous for his classical translations. Robert Lynd wrote of him in 1925 that “Jowett is one of the few writers who have the luck to go down to posterity as satellites of the supreme men of genius and it not likely that for many generations to come English readers will be able to think of Plato without thinking of Jowett’s Plato. He aimed in his translation at producing the effect of an original work.” He accomplished this not at the sake of scholarship or accuracy and was able to translate the current of life that runs throughout this great masterpiece. These are considered to be by far the best translations of Plato's DIALOGUES. This edition contains a new Introduction on Plato by Professor Demos of Harvard University. Random House hardcover

IV pencilled ownership inscription of Thomas Brown Merton College Oxford. Plato's Dialogues translated by Benjamin Jowett 18171893 master of Baliol College Oxford 'revised and corrected throughout with marginal analyses and an index of subjects and proper names.' 'Jowett's first intention was to produce a commentary on the Republic. But concluding that this text was to be understood only through an analysis of Plato's other works he commenced what eventually became his translations of the dialogues with introductions in which many of his own theological and philosophical ideas were embedded. The translation appeared in 1871 in four volumes and in a revised edition in five volumes in 1875. There followed a translation of Thucydides with notes on the Greek text in 1881 and of Aristotle's Politics in 1885. A third edition of his translations of Plato appeared in 1892 but the edition of the Republic which had been in a sense the foundation and starting point of all his work as an editor and translator of the Greek classics was still unfinished at his death and was completed and published by his friend and biographer Lewis Campbell. For thirty years the work had occupied the chief place among his interests. . His admirers thought that his translations of Plato and Thucydides superseded all previous translations in elegance and polish and even some modern translators have been content to use Jowett's version as a basis for their own work. But one of his twentieth-century successors in the chair has asserted that any page of Jowett's translation of Plato 'will supply some evidence of Housman's stern judgment' Lloyd-Jones 16.'
