It is dated 6 May 1987 and mentions a possible exhibition of Martin's treasures at the Morgan Library "in the fall." Without saying so the letter hints that the Morgan would be an appropriate repository for Martin's incredible library. The attempt proved to be futile as the Martin collection was sold at auction in 1989 and 1990 realizing a total of $35303000. Fine condition in a Very Good dust jacket which has 1 small chip to the rear panel. The jacket is protected by a removable Brodart clear-plastic sleeve. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a library discard. Pages are crisp clean and unmarked. 1986. First Edition. Includes a bibliography of printing by Caxton in Cologne Bruges and Westminster. This book discusses a previously unknown Caxton printing and reproduces in facsimile vellum strips utilized in the binding of a volume of other Caxton imprints from the Rosenwald collection. Illustrated with 19 b/w reproductions. Bound in the original gilt-stamped green cloth. From the dust jacket: "In a remarkable feat of synthesis and historical imagination Needham weaves together the stories of William Caxton the wealthy cloth merchant who at fifty years of age mastered the newly invented art of printing and took the craft to England of the broadside indulgence he printed and of the institution he printed it for.
