Stated "Third printing May 21 1917"; originally published in April of that year and with a "Second Edition" early in the month of May. The lessons in this booklet cover "Food as an Energy Producer" and were “first arranged for lessons in Canteen Cooking from the Massachusetts Branch of the Special Aid Society for American Preparedness”. Alice Bradley had been the head of Miss Farmer's School of Cookery since 1915 when she rose to the position upon the death of the school's namesake. She ran the school through the mid-1940s publishing numerous books along the way. This was one of her earliest published works though I've been unable to establish priority of the first few as she was prolific in 1917 issuing The Candy Book a series of Demonstration Lectures and this book of Lessons. A few early and neat ink corrections to tables at rear; in publisher’s printed brown wrappers; fine. OCLC locates six copies of all printings; Cagle 99. Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery unknown books

1876réf. 004230San Francisco: Bradley & Rulofson 1876. First Edition. Good. Cabinet card; 4 x 6 1/4; printed key to verso; small nick to lower left corner and a vertical crease through middle; a few minor spots to verso; in good to very good condition. Quite-scarce early form of photographic art the so called 'cartes mosaique' was created by Bradley & Rulofson of San Francisco. The studio which would become known for capturing the images of hundreds of celebrities and notable Californians was founded by Henry William Bradley 1813-1891 in 1850 after he would immigrate to California from North Carolina during the Gold Rush and later would be joined by William Herman Rulofson 1826-1878 who would also come to California from Canada as a prospector. The process of their 'cartes mosaiques' - an early predecessor of the photomontage as an art form - was based on French photographer Andre Adolphe Eugene Disderi's 1819 - 1889 'carte-de-visite mosaique' which the latter had patented in 1863. Much more elaborate and involved than Disderi's the Bradley & Rulofson cabinet cards consisted of numerous images of single persons which had been photographed separately and then cut out and arranged around each other often partially overlapping thus allowing customers to own many portraits of celebrities at once. The current card included 110 of these celebrities identified in the key on verso. The latter also included testimonies and opinions of Bradley & Rulofson's art. Bradley & Rulofson unknown books

A fine but ex-library copy with minimal markings; i.e. rubber stamps on title page & bottom of text block. This volume examines the role of divine grace in the non-dualist soteriology of Śaṃkara. The author argues that grace is an essential but generally overlooked feature in Śaṃkara’s enlightenment spirituality. Introductory chapters summarize recent developments in Śaṃkara research Śaṃkara’s epistemology and ontology ancient VedÄntic teachings on grace and modern scholarly disagreement about grace in Śaṃkara’s Advaita system. The heart of the book consists of two lengthy exegetical chapters examining Śaṃkara’s key passages on grace from his dozen genuine works. The final chapter presents for the first time a systematic summary of Śaṃkara’s understanding of the operation and necessity of divine grace. This book provides a useful summary of Śaṃkara’s system as a whole besides offering a radical revision of the standard understanding of Śaṃkara’s soteriology. It also reveals that Śaṃkara was much more indebted in his thinking to his Vedantic predecessors than had hitherto been thought.
