1957réf. 347487Chicago 1957. 16 loose pages 8.5x11 inches; some penned changes paper toned occasional edge chips. No author or title is given but Bradley refers to himself in the text in the middle of the first page and notes developments "here in Chicago." The organization being addressed is not identified though it is clearly a bookish society. Bradley mentions that the debate on censorship between Harper's Magazine's John Fischer and Father John Courtney Murray had taken place the previous year placing this speech in 1957. Bradley was a prominent Chicago editorialist at the time published in the Chicago Herald Examiner the Chicago Sun and the Chicago Daily News where he was literary editor. He later headed Heritage Bookshop of Chicago. In this speech he discusses a number of controversial literary cases and criticizes censorship efforts in Chicago. "The censors will always be with us. There are always those who would play God and those who are too timorous to want to mention that there are males and females and that sometimes they come together for more than a cup of tea. We must not submit either to the emasculation of our political opinions nor to the emasculation of our literary talents. unknown books
