The book comprises ""a curious bundle of papers essays semi-dialogues and notes seemingly ill-assorted but in fact dialectically arrangedÉ the chief advantage of this method seems to have been to give Kierkegaard the opportunity of letting different sides of his mind converse as individuals with each other in a semi-Socratic fashionÉ Choice as the title of his work suggests was at the root of Kierkegaard's theory. There can be no system of existence only a system of ideas. From this he develops his thesis of 'Existence' since taken up by the modern ExistentialistsÉ As a thinker Kierkegaard had to wait for the twentieth century to find his audience; he is now generally considered to be however eccentric one of the most important Christian philosophers"" PMM 314. Binding tight and square pages clean bright and unmarked. 1962 Trade Paperback. xcvii 260 pp. Translated into English from the original Danish and introduced by David F. Swenson with new introduction and commentary by Niels Thulstrup translation revised and commentary translated by Howard V. Hong. A Christian philosophical work written by Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard in 1844 the second of three works written under the pseudonym Johannes Climacus; the other two were De omnibus dubitandum est in 1841 and Concluding Unscientific Postscript to Philosophical Fragments in 1846. In Philosophical Fragments he begins with Greek Platonic philosophy exploring the implications of venturing beyond the Socratic understanding of truth acquired through recollection to the Christian experience of acquiring truth through grace. Published in 1844 and not originally planned to appear under the pseudonym Climacus the book varies in tone and substance from the other works so attributed but it is dialectically related to them as well as to the other pseudonymous writings. The central issue of Johannes Climacus is doubt. Probably written between November 1842 and April 1843 but unfinished and published only posthumously this book was described by Kierkegaard as an attack on modern speculative philosophy by "means of the melancholy irony which did not consist in any single utterance on the part of Johannes Climacus but in his whole life. . . . Johannes does what we are told to do--he actually doubts everything--he suffers through all the pain of doing that becomes cunning almost acquires a bad conscience. When he has gone as far in that direction as he can go and wants to come back he cannot do so. . . . Now he despairs his life is wasted his youth is spent in these deliberations. Life does not acquire any meaning for him and all this is the fault of philosophy." A note by Kierkegaard suggests how he might have finished the work: "Doubt is conquered not by the system but by faith just as it is faith that has brought doubt into the world!. This work which contrasts ethical and aesthetic attitudes towards life established his reputation as an important thinker. "Published in two volumes in 1843 Either/Or is an influential book written by the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard exploring the aesthetic and ethical 'phases' or 'stages' of existence. Either/Or portrays two life views one consciously hedonistic the other based on ethical duty and responsibility. Each life view is written and represented by a fictional pseudonymous author the prose of the work depending on the life view being discussed. For example the aesthetic life view is written in short essay form with poetic imagery and allusions discussing aesthetic topics such as music seduction drama and beauty. The ethical life view is written as two long letters with a more argumentative and restrained prose discussing moral responsibility critical reflection and marriage. The views of the book are not neatly summarized but are expressed as lived experiences embodied by the pseudonymous authors. The book's central concern is the primal question asked by Aristotle 'How should we live''" -- Wikipedia ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "Soren Aabye Kierkegaard 5 May 1813 - 11 November 1855 was a prolific 19th century Danish philosopher and theologian. Kierkegaard strongly criticised both the Hegelianism of his time and what he saw as the empty formalities of the Church of Denmark. Much of his work deals with religious themes such as faith in God the institution of the Christian Church Christian ethics and theology and the emotions and feelings of individuals when faced with life choices. His early work was written under various pseudonyms who present their own distinctive viewpoints in a complex dialogue. Kierkegaard left the task of discovering the meaning of his works to the reader because "the task must be made difficult for only the difficult inspires the noble-hearted". Scholars have interpreted Kierkegaard variously as an existentialist neo-orthodoxist postmodernist humanist and individualist. Crossing the boundaries of philosophy theology psychology and literature he is an influential figure in contemporary thought. Princeton University Press hardcover books
