Some minor fraying at bottom of spine marginal pencil marks throughout but book is in very good condition. This work outlines the decisions and discussions of the Parisian Sanhedrin. The decree issued on the 30th of May 1806 requested that a Special Assembly of Jewish leaders and Rabbis from all of the French departments would meet in Paris to discuss all outstanding matters including answering questions dealing with accusations against the Jews made by the anti-Semites. It was on the 23rd of July 1806 when all of these representatives met in Paris at which time Napoleon stated: "My desire is to make Jews equal citizens in France have a conciliation between their religion and their responsibilities in becoming French and to answer all the accusations made against them. I want all people living in France to be equal citizens and benefit from our laws." One hundred and eleven representatives of the Jewish community representing all the departments of France and Northern Italy met at City Hall. Napoleon had requested answers to accusations made against the Jews so he could understand their position clearly. The reunion of so many Jews from the different parts of France represented the renewal of the famous "Sanhedrin" which according to Jewish Talmudic tradition ruled Israel from 170 to 106 B.C.E. This second volume complete in itself is famous for the author's work on women philosophers. Diogenes Laertius is the prime source of biographical information on Greek philosophers and the present volume by Aegidius Menagius Gilles Ménage of Angers 1613-92 presents the commentator's elaborate notes on this author. Perhaps more interesting to modern readers is the small "Historical account of philosophic women" which includes among many others both Aspasia and Hypatia. That work Aegidius dedicated to the classicist Anna Dacier. Henric Wetstenium unknown books

With several indices. Brunet II 93. Dibdin 503-504. Graesse 396. Moss 400. Oxford Classical Dictionary 474-475. Brunet calls this edition the most complete and the most beautiful of Diogenes' Lives. Moss refers to it as a rare elegant and excellent edition with the most correct and critical revision of the Greek text. Dibdin praises it as the best and most splendid extant edition of the author's works. Diogenes Laertius' Lives were likely composed around the middle of the third century A.C.E. Diogenes writes about philosophers from Ionia the pre-Socratics and about a few Stoic figures. His biographies span from Thales to Epicurus. He names his historical sources and his work is quite copious in its list of quotations and its references to other writers. Diogenes' work on the Stoic philosophers and on Epicurus is particularly valuable from a historical perspective. A lovely edition of ancient Greek and Roman history with some of Renaissance Europe's greatest classicists contributing to its production. The front flyleaf of volume two is slightly misaligned and the second volume's rear hinge shows a tiny split and a repair not affecting the integrity of the binding.
