1940réf. 162955New York: Lanz of Salzburg c. 1940. A playful New York fashion catalogue in which the Austrian-Jewish émigré artist Lisl Weil's crisp white-and-blue ornament and lively folkloric figures transform Ernst Bloch's photographic plates into a miniature illustrated wardrobe. Lanz's dirndls blouses aprons and accessories are presented as an idealised vision of Austrian folk culture carefully repackaged for the American market. The catalogue belongs to the earliest phase of Weil's career in the United States. Born Ilse Elisabeth Weisz 1910-2006 in Vienna and later adopted by the merchant Isidor Weil she studied at the Vienna Academy of Applied Arts and began publishing illustrations in Viennese periodicals while still young. Forced to leave Austria after the Anschluss because of her Jewish ancestry she arrived in New York in 1939 where decorative work for Lanz of Salzburg was among her early commissions. She later became a prolific author and illustrator of children's books. Oblong octavo pamphlet 227 x 104 mm. With 12 loose leaves of halftone illustrations from photographs by Ernst Bloch coloured decorations by Weil in white and blue. Original wrappers printed in red white and black on a light blue background two flaps. A little sunned closed tears to flap folds but holding interior advertisements near-fine: overall very good. unknown

Black cloth hardcover stamped in deep red on spine and front cover; dustjacket; xv1-302pp. Mild dusting to upper edge of text block else a tight very Near Fine copy free of markings or notable wear. In the original dustwrapper all four corners clipped by publisher with printed price of $4.00 on front flap. Quite bright and clean the spine free of fading but rear panel scuffed costing a few characters of text with a bit of wear to extremities including small chips at spine crown and lower front panel - Very Good. Preceded by the U.K. first edition the same year. Quite presentable copy of Weil's posthumously-published masterpiece written in London the year before her death from self-inflicted starvation published in French as L'Enracinement: prélude à une déclaration des devoirs envers l'être humain Paris: Gallimard 1949. Perhaps owing somewhat to Eliot's effusive preface this rather difficult work of social theory begun as an analysis of France's capitulation to the Nazis during the Vichy period achieved a large English-language readership though as with its clear analogue Arendt's The Human Condition it's unclear how much the book was actually read by those who discussed it. Regardless The Need For Roots remains one of the essential works of the post-war period. Never out of print but quite hard to find in the first edition. G.P. Putnam's Sons unknown
