This is a luxurious illustrated edition of Rostand's classic work offered in a sumptuous binding done by the Club Bindery for its co-founder and manager Robert Hoe. Rostand's influential and enduringly popular 1897 verse play in five acts--sometimes referred to colloquially as the "Romance of the Nose"--is loosely based upon the real-life story of the French author and duelist Cyrano de Bergerac 1619-55 who was famous for having a prodigious proboscis. A theatrical triumph from its opening night the play focuses on the eloquent Cyrano's unrequited love for the comely Roxanne whom he must court as secret proxy for a friend of handsome visage but wooden tongue. Rostand 1868-1918 wrote a number of successful plays often like "Cyrano" based on figures from French history. The present beautiful large-format copy was originally owned by Robert Hoe a founder of the Grolier Club and one of the world's great book collectors. After Grolier was established in 1884 it soon became apparent that the country's few established hand binders were overtaxed in providing repairs and rebinding for the club members' rapidly accumulating acquisitions. As a consequence in 1895 Grolier members along with Edwin Holden and other wealthy collectors established the Club Bindery in order to attract European craftsmen to provide close to home fine quality binding work rivalling what was available abroad. The Club Bindery was in operation until 1909 with Hoe being its manager and most important client. It provided bindings that tended to be traditional in style--though frequently with elaborate decoration--and that lived up to its patrons' expectations in terms of excellence. The first members of the staff of the Club Bindery were the Englishmen R. W. Smith and Frank Mansell. They were subsequently joined by a number of French binders chief among them being Leon Maillard who had worked previously for Cuzin Gruel and Marius-Michel and whose precise and intricate finishing is impressively demonstrated on our binding here. It is said by Beverly Chew that Hoe 1839-1911 had a collection that was "the finest America has ever contained." He acquired illuminated manuscripts early printing he owned a Gutenberg Bible on paper and one on vellum fine bindings French and English literature and Americana and when his library was sold in 1911-12 it fetched nearly $2 million a record that held until the Streeter sale more than 50 years later. The present volume represents the fine level of aesthetic achievement typical of the bindery and it is especially impressive because of its significant dimensions. Armand Magnier unknown

A beautifully-bound first edition of the classic French play about the large-nosed Cyrano obliged to help another more handsome man woo the beautiful Roxanne who Cyrano already loves. Rostand's play stages the tragic complicity between two halves of man puts into question the existence of justice or happy love in this world but ends with the evidence of hope: in the guise of Christian it is the soul of Cyrano that Roxanne loved. This drama in five acts saw its first production on December 27th 1897 with the leading role played by Constant Coquelin who went on to play the role 410 times and toured the play in North America. The dedication of this book reads " C'est à l'âme de CYRANO que je voulais dédier ce poème. Mais puisqu'elle a passé en vous COQUELIN c'est à cous que le dédie. E. R." I wanted to dedicate this poem to the soul of CYRANO. Since that soul has passed through you COQUELIN I dedicated to you. E.R. Rostand was elected to the prestigious Académie Française the following year making him the youngest member to date at age 31. Cyrano has been performed all over the world and has seen many cinematic adaptations including the 1950 production starring Jose Ferrer winner of the 1950 Oscar for the Best Actor. 1898Best.-Nr. 000927New York New York Boston Paris France: LAMSON WOLFFE & CO. Boston Mass. Good with no dust jacket. 1898. First Edition. Hardcover. On offer is a highly important association copy of the first edition of Howard Thayer Kingsburys English verse translation of Edmond Rostands Cyrano de Bergerac inscribed in French by the translator directly to Rostand. According to the art and manuscript dealer who formerly owned this book it came from the personal library of Edmond Rostand and the date is in Rostands hand. See Provenance Notes following the listing for more information. The history of this translation is unusually rich. Rostands French-language Cyrano de Bergerac became an immediate sensation after its December 1897 Paris premiere setting off a rapid transatlantic scramble to translate publish and stage the play in English. Kingsburys version achieved special prominence because it was the text accepted and played by actor-manager Richard Mansfield who opened the American production at New Yorks Garden Theatre on October 3 1898. The theatrical competition was intense: on that same night Augustin Daly opened a rival English-language production in Philadelphia starring Charles Richman as Cyrano and Ada Rehan as Roxane. The Mansfield production was a major American success running at the Garden Theatre from October 3 to November 26 1898 and returning there in a 18991900 revival with Mansfield again in the title role. Kingsburys translation therefore stands as the version most closely tied to Cyranos first major American theatrical triumph. The race to publish English translations was equally crowded. Doubleday & McClure announced the Gertrude Hall translation in October 1898 while Lamson Wolffe and Company soon announced Kingsburys translation which was available for sale by early November 1898 according to historical news sources. Other English-language versions appeared in the same period including translations or editions associated with Gladys Thomas and Mary F. Guillemard Charles Renauld Charles F. Rideal and others. This copy therefore belongs directly to the remarkable 1898 publication and performance scramble that carried Rostands French theatrical phenomenon into the English-speaking world. The present copy is exceptional because Kingsbury inscribed his Mansfield-associated English text back to Rostand himself. The inscription reads: à M. Edmond Rostand avec les salutations respectueuses et empressées du traducteur Howard Thayer Kingsbury le 20 mai 1912To M. Edmond Rostand with the respectful and eager salutations of the translator Howard Thayer Kingsbury May 20 1912. The 1912 date remains intriguing. It is unclear whether Kingsbury sent the book to Rostand at that late date or whether the date was added separately. One possible contemporary context is the American and English-language afterlife of Rostands later play Chantecler which played in New York in 1911 and toured into 1912. This play had been translated into English in 1910 by both Louis N. Parker for its Broadway run and by Gertrude Hall the same translator whose Cyrano had been bypassed by Mansfield in favor of Kingsburys version in 1898. Any connection however remains speculative. What is certain is that this copy unites the French author of Cyrano de Bergerac with the American translator whose version carried the play onto the New York stage in Mansfields celebrated production. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTEHoward Thayer Kingsbury 18701937 showed early literary promise at Yale where he won several writing prizes earned honors in English and served on the editorial board of the Yale Literary Magazine. Although he later became best known as a distinguished lawyer international law specialist and military legal officer his translation of Cyrano de Bergerac remains an important literary achievement. Kingsburys version was selected by Richard Mansfield for the plays first major American production giving him a lasting place in the early English-language history of Rostands masterpiece. He also pursued a prominent legal career including service with Coudert Brothers work as a special assistant to the U. S. Attorney General in antitrust matters and leadership within the American Branch of the International Law Association. Edmond Rostand 18681918 was a French poet and dramatist best remembered as the author of Cyrano de Bergerac one of the most celebrated plays of the modern French stage. Born in Marseille Rostand emerged as a leading figure of late nineteenth-century Neo-Romantic drama bringing verse wit heroism and emotional grandeur back to a theatre increasingly dominated by realism and naturalism. Cyrano de Bergerac first performed in Paris in December 1897 became an immediate sensation and secured Rostands international reputation. His other notable works include Les Romanesques La Princesse Lointaine LAiglon and Chantecler. He was elected to the Académie française in 1901. Cyrano de Bergerac was first staged at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin in Paris on December 28 1897 and published in France by Charpentier et Fasquelle in 1898. Kingsburys English translation appeared the same year through Lamson Wolffe & Co. and was the version used by Richard Mansfield when he became the first major actor to play Cyrano in English on the American stage. Rostands play was inspired by the historical Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac 16191655 a seventeenth-century French writer known for his bold intellect satire and challenges to accepted ideas. Rostand transformed him into something larger than life: a brilliant poet swordsman lover and outsider whose wit and courage made him one of the enduring figures of modern theatre. 1898Best.-Nr. 170364Paris: Librairie Charpentier et Fasquelle Eugène Fasquelle Éditeur 1898. A copy with real panache First edition tirage de tête number 48 of 50 deluxe copies printed on japon; a very rare survival in the original decorated wrappers which are unique to the japon issue. It is the only such example we can trace in commerce. Rostand's verse play has since its debut performance on 27 December 1897 at which the audience were still applauding a full hour after the curtain fell captivated audiences and readers around the globe and immortalized the 17th-century libertine writer on which its lead character was based. His heroic depiction single-handedly changed the meaning of the French word "panache" flamboyance and reckless courage from the cavalryman's plume into a virtue and also introduced the word into the English language. Octavo. Text in French. Original green florally patterned wrappers front cover lettered in orange edges uncut. Housed in a dark blue quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Some sunning around spine light rubbing to ends and corners and superficially to front joint otherwise a near-fine copy. unknown
