Dr. Claribel Cone 1864-1929 and Miss Etta Cone 1870-1949 are the renowned Baltimore sisters whose social circle included Picasso Matisse Gertrude Stein and the dazzling if lesser lights who circled around those supernovae. The sisters' collecting story is much more interesting than most since they didn't acquire their art on gilded sprees or at auction the way their era's coal magnates and rail tycoons did-we mention no names. Money they certainly had but they also had friends and it was that social circle that give birth to one of the most celebrated private collections in the United States which came to constitute an entire wing of the Baltimore Museum of Art. A first edition/first printing in Very Good condition with minimal shelfwear in alike dust-jacket with similar wear; Monte Cassino is a topography of blood and bone. The landscape is pitted with craters gouged by shells and bombs scarred by land mines and machine-gun fire. But even more than the physical damage Monte Cassino has taken on a psychological weight. For many it is the site of the greatest slaughter of World War II--the Battle of Monte Cassino which claimed over 15000 Allied lives. For Hapgood and Richardson the tragedy of Monte Cassino was also a subject of fascination. They traveled to the mountain and recorded their impressions in this book. From the shattered monastery to the blasted towns below the authors evoke the emotional power of the place. They tell the story of the battle the heroism of the men who fought there and the cost of victory.Monte Cassino is a gripping account of one of the great conflicts of the twentieth century and a testament to the human spirit.; 8vo; 269 pages . 2001réf. UB-17892Harvard University Press 2001. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. First Edition. Hardcover. A highly presentable bright clean likely unread first edition copy of the popular historian's important 2001 work. From the publisher: "Historians overwhelmingly have blamed the demise of Reconstruction on the South and on white Americans' persistent racism. Heather Cox Richardson argues instead that class along with race was critical to Reconstruction's end. Northern support for freed blacks and Reconstruction weakened as growing labor interests critiqued the economy and called for government redistribution of wealth." "Using newspapers public speeches popular tracts Congressional reports and private correspondence Richardson traces the changing Northern attitudes toward African-Americans from the Republicans' idealized image of black workers in 1861 through the 1901 publication of Booker T. Washington's Up from Slavery. She examines such issues as black suffrage disfranchisement taxation westward migration lynching and civil rights to detect the trajectory of Northern disenchantment with Reconstruction. She reveals a growing backlash from Northerners against those who believed that inequalities should be addressed through working-class action and the emergence of an American middle class that championed individual productivity and saw African-Americans as a threat to their prosperity.
