1996Best.-Nr. 75295New York: Pantheon Books 1996. First edition stated. First printing stated. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. xvii 1 285 1 pages. Footnotes. Index. Press Release laid in. Inscribed and dated by author on fep to Lucky believed to be Selwa Carmen Showker "Lucky" Roosevelt who was Chief of Protocol of the United States for almost seven years from 1982-1989-longer than anyone has ever served in that position. Elliot Lee Richardson July 20 1920 December 31 1999 was an American lawyer and politician who was a member of the cabinet of Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. As U.S. Attorney General he was a prominent figure in the Watergate Scandal and resigned rather than obey President Nixon's order to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox. Richardson is one of only two individuals to serve in four United States Cabinet positions within the United States government: Secretary of Health Education and Welfare from 1970 to 1973 Secretary of Defense from January to May 1973 Attorney General from May to October 1973 and Secretary of Commerce from 1976 to 1977. Derived from a Kirkus review: A humane optimistic view of national politics from a longtime Washington insider. Richardson Attorney General in Nixon's last days and a former key official in the departments of state and defense asks us to remember all that is right in American politics. American government works he suggests because Americans demand accountability and openness and shun ideology in favor of practical idealism; yet for all that there is a growing sentiment across the land fueled by the media that things have gone badly wrong inside the Beltway. Richardson a moderate Republican allows that ``politics as usual'' may require some fine-tuning: For one thing he believes that Vice President Gore's National Performance Review Report hasn't gone quite far enough in setting standards for the way federal departments carry out their mandates. He adds that no one wants to look at the root causes of our troubles which are milder than we imagine them to be. No one takes more hits than Ross Perot for whom the mild-mannered and cordial Richardson seems to have a genuine disdain. His hopeful book is a welcome relief from the gloom-and-doom polemics that now overfill the current-events stacks. Pantheon Books hardcover

Traces the development of stealth technology explains its design principles and discusses radar-absorbing materials control of heat and sound emissions and the use of electronic warfare systems. Stealth technology or LO for low observability is not one technology. It is a set of technologies used in combinations that can greatly reduce the distances at which a person or vehicle can be detected; more so radar cross-section reductions but also acoustic thermal and other aspects. The author was a defense journalist specializing in the fields of aviation guided missiles and electronics. He was formerly defense editor of Flight International editor of Military Technology and Economics and editor of Defense Material. He was the author of several books. Stealth technology also termed low observable technology LO technology is a sub-discipline of military tactics and passive and active electronic countermeasures1 which covers a range of methods used to make personnel aircraft ships submarines missiles satellites and ground vehicles less visible ideally invisible to radar infrared sonar and other detection methods. It corresponds to military camouflage for these parts of the electromagnetic spectrum i.e. multi-spectral camouflage. Development of modern stealth technologies in the United States began in 1958 where earlier attempts to prevent radar tracking of its U-2 spy planes during the Cold War by the Soviet Union had been unsuccessful.5 Designers turned to developing a specific shape for planes that tended to reduce detection by redirecting electromagnetic radiation waves from radars. Radiation-absorbent material was also tested and made to reduce or block radar signals that reflect off the surfaces of aircraft. Such changes to shape and surface composition comprise stealth technology as currently used on the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit "Stealth Bomber". The concept of stealth is to operate or hide while giving enemy forces no indication as to the presence of friendly forces. This concept was first explored through camouflage to make an object's appearance blend into the visual background. As the potency of detection and interception technologies radar infrared search and tracking surface-to-air missiles etc. have increased so too has the extent to which the design and operation of military personnel and vehicles have been affected in response. Some military uniforms are treated with chemicals to reduce their infrared signature. A modern stealth vehicle is designed from the outset to have a chosen spectral signature. The degree of stealth embodied in a given design is chosen according to the projected threats of detection. Orion Books hardcover
