1903réf. 55317N.p. but likely Chicago. April 1903. Map of Wyoming Oil Lands An interesting promotional map produced by Chicago oil and real estate speculator Charles O. Richardson highlighting the oil-producing areas of Uinta County Wyoming at the dawn of the 20th century. Uinta County is located at the extreme southwestern corner of Wyoming on the border with Utah. At the time this map was produced crude oil was vitally important to both the Standard Oil Company and the Union Pacific Railroad - for the former to refine into gasoline and for the latter to lubricate locomotives. Both entities appear on the present map. The "Index" or key of the map references the first two wells of the Standard Oil Company other oil & gas wells the lands of the Standard Reserve Oil Company the lines for the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad red dashed line the Union Pacific Railroad Main Line solid red line and certain county and other roads. On the far right portion of the sheet is a large schematic cross-section showing "the stratifications of oil sand encountered" in drilling the Union Pacific Oil Well. Oil was known to exist in Wyoming long before the present map since at least the 1830s when Captain Bonneville found an oil spring near Dallas Dome. Uinta County was known to have oil near Hilliard when Fort Bridger was established nearby in 1842 both appear on the present map. Yet this map is one of the earliest depictions of the industry on a promotional piece produced when the railroad the automobile and the motorcycle created explosive demand for oil. Overall the present map is testament to the importance of southwestern Wyoming in the history of the oil industry. Wyoming still ranks in the top ten among oil-producing states in the U.S. A rare map with only four copies reported in OCLC at Yale SMU's DeGolyer Library the University of Utah and the University of Wyoming. Original folds. Slight separations at a few crossfolds few short closed marginal tears. Very good. EBERSTADT 130:609. OCLC 14191520. unknown books

1849réf. 57547New York: William H. Richardson 1849. Scarce Mexican-American War Journal and Santa Fe Trail Overland The second printing of the third edition of this work after the very rare first edition of 1847 and the second edition of 1848. Richardson's Journal is considered one of the most reliable and valuable works on the Doniphan expedition and New Mexico during the Mexican-American War and beginning with the second edition it was accompanied by a facsimile letter written by Doniphan praising it for its accuracy. Richardson enlisted as a mounted volunteer due to patriotism engendered on the 4th of July in Carrollton Missouri. He took part in Doniphan's expedition over the Santa Fe Trail in the fall of 1846 heading south to El Paso by the first of the New Year then on to Chihuahua and eventually to Matamoros where the command shipped by boat to New Orleans. By July 10 1847 Richardson was back home in Anne Arundel County Maryland having completed a journey of over 5500 miles. The Mexican-American War is generally considered the first American war to receive extensive media coverage and public demand for news and information about the conflict was insatiable. The first edition of this fascinating and quite popular journal-cum-overland was published before the end of 1847 in Baltimore and it went through two more editions and four more printings by 1850. OCLC records this second printing of the third edition at eleven institutions and all editions are scarce in the market. Original pictorial wrappers. Slightly chipped at foot of spine. Self wraps; paper lightly browned small stain on top page. Very good. This article contains the text of a lecture given to the Society of Arts London December 18 1884. It provides a short history of the subject "the lethal process" a table of anesthetic gases and vapors showing their chemical properties and 5 figures illustrating lethal chamber used in the euthanasia of animals. Richardson "spent many years in attempts to relieve pain among men by discovering and adapting substances capable of producing general or local anaesthesis and among animals by more humane methods of slaughter. He brought into use no less that fourteen anaesthetics of which methylene bichloride is the best known and he invented the first double-valved mouthpiece for use in the administration of chloroform. He also produced local insensibility be freezing the part with an ether spray and he gave animals euthanasia by means of a lethal chamber." DNB Vol. XXII Supplement p. 1170. Sir Benjamin Richardson contributed widely to the history of medicine whose important work Disciples of Aesculapius was published in 1900. See: Garrison History of medicine p. 885; Garrison and Morton 6721. In addition this issue of the Scientific American Supplement contains two articles related to anesthesia entitled "The kola-nut" and "Cultivation of the coca plant in the United States" both related the production and use of cocaine as an anesthetic agent.
