James Richardson 1806-1851 was an English traveller in Africa and an anti-slavery campaigner. This is the account of the author's third expedition published posthumously. He travelled from Tripoli in the company of the German explorers Barth and Overweg. After crossing the Sahara and reaching Zinder he died shortly after leaving the town on 4th March 1851. Small "Withdrawn" stamps of the H.M. Stationary Office on each half title a very good set of the first edition in a dark green cloth. Slipcase clean and unmarked with light wear. Six maps stored in pocket inside back board. The map entitled "Shewing the Discoveries Made by British Officers in the Arctic Regions from the Year 1818 - 1826" bears coloured lines which presumably indicate the routes travelled - we are not sure if these are original or were added by the prior owner. Other than this possible defect, a superb copy of gift quality. Book
