Grafton's third published novel following Keziah Dane 1967 and The Lolly-Madonna War 1969 and years of screenwriting for television A Is for Alibi was her first mystery and the first Kinsey Millhone novel beginning the beloved "Alphabet" series. Over the next thirty-five years she would carry the series to Y is for Yesterday 2017. She died that December before writing the planned Z is for Zero. Kinsey works out of Santa Teresa the fictional stand-in for Santa Barbara that Grafton took from Ross Macdonald. She is thirty-two twice divorced self-reliant and wryly unsentimental. Together with Marcia Muller's Sharon McCone and Sara Paretsky's V.I. Warshawski whose Indemnity Only also appeared in 1982 she helped claim the hardboiled private-eye novel for women both as writers and as protagonists. Patricia Moyes's blurb on the front flap now reads as prophecy: she predicted the series would run "all through the alphabet." From the publisher: A IS FOR AVENGER. A tough-talking former cop private investigator Kinsey Millhone has set up a modest detective agency in a quiet corner of Santa Teresa California. She's a twice-divorced loner with few personal possessions and fewer personal attachments but with a soft spot for underdogs and lost causes. A IS FOR ACCUSED. That's why she draws desperate clients like Nikki Fife. Eight years ago she was convicted of killing her philandering husband. Now she's out on parole and needs Kinsey's help to find the real killer. But after all this time clearing Nikki's bad name won't be easy. A IS FOR ALIBI. If there's one thing that makes Kinsey Millhone feel alive it's playing on the edge. When her investigation turns up a second corpse more suspects and a new reason to kill Kinsey discovers that the edge is closer-and sharper-than she imagined. 2001rif. 91507Berkeley: University of California Press 2001. cloth paper cover and spine labels slipcase. Aldine Press. small 4to. cloth paper cover and spine labels slipcase. 671 3 pages. First edition. Fine in fine slipcase. This catalogue provides a descriptive bibliography of books in the Ahmanson-Murphy Aldine collection at the University of California Los Angeles together with abbreviated notices of works not at UCLA. Handsomely produced slipcased and carefully annotated this volume should become a major resource for Aldine studies and the history of the book. The Aldine Press revolutionized the production accessibility and use of the book. Founded by Aldus Manutius c. 1452-1515 the press introduced a number of innovations that helped shape the development of the modern book including italic type and the smaller pocket-sized volume. By putting the Greek and Latin classics in a form that everyone could afford it revolutionized scholarship: the uniform Aldine texts made comparison and collation universally available and they were used in schools. Collectors were interested in the Aldine Press from the beginning; Jean Grolier acquired over two hundred of its publications often having the books elegantly bound and handsomely illuminated. Since that time the output of the Aldine Press has been sought after by scholars book collectors and librarians. Copies of its books are found in libraries all over the world where they remain a prized possession and the object of much scholarly research. For thirty-two years Franklin D. Murphy who came to UCLA as its sixth chancellor fostered the expansion of the Aldine collection and encouraged its growth. During the greater part of this long period he was joined in these endeavors by the Ahmanson Foundation whose constant support permitted the collection to increase in both size and significance. Following Dr. Murphy's death the Ahmanson Foundation continued its generous support for the expansion of the collection and in addition by means of a grant late in 1996 enabled the present catalogue to come into existence. The binding cloth used for both the book and the slipcase is a Japanese book cloth no. 2504 distributed by the Campbell-Logan Bindery. The binding board is 110 point acid-free Eska board from Ecological Fibers Inc. University of California Press unknown books
