In a personal email message from the author to this reader which is also contained in the blue pocket the author goes on to state that "This message to my imagined girl continues on to address personal & universal themes of love and loss and to offer a backward glimpse. The book has evolved from this instinct in this spirit and tries to give a palpable sense of one person speaking to another across yhe vastness of time as all books do. Other girls and other ideas have swirled their way into the visual and written narrative alluding to qualities and states fears and joys that we most likely all share.". réf. 25479Sydney : Gwen Harrison and Sue Anderson 2012. Quarto 370mm tall full stained kangaroo with goat spine pp. 50 comprised of multi-plate sugar-lift and aquatint etched plates hand-finished with paint with letterpress text presented in a clamshell box. Limited to 6 copies signed by the artist. ""This artwork comprises a series of prints and a variety of texts including reflections from historical and contemporary writers that explore the silencing of the marginalised: from the oppression of Indigenous Australians to the exploitation of the English and Irish convicts to the dehumanisation of asylum seekers. In this work the artists seek to represent the way in which minority groups have been and still are denied their right to a voice. This 'Australian way' sits uncomfortably with our popular self-image and diminishes the strength and validity of our democratic society."" - Lessons in History Vol. II : Democracy Grahame Galleries 2012 p. 7. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request – – IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - FLAWLESS COPY BRAND NEW PRISTINE NEVER OPENED -- While the men of Classical Athens were fighting wars and producing great works of art what were the women doing According to some of the male writers of the period they were at home making babies and wool; others thought they were likely to be visiting their friends and partying till the small hours. This text investigates the many contrasting images of Athenian women which the Classical Age produced. Taking as its starting point women in the Parthenon sculptures it examines two levels of feminine experience: the human and the divine. The interplay between women’s religious prominence and their domestic obscurity is discussed in relation to the young citizen women who lead the procession; while the great goddesses represented in the frieze are studied in terms of their relationships with human worshippers and on a symbolic level with the mythological females such as the Amazons who appear in the metopes. Finally the book turns to a third aspect looking at the women who do not appear in the Parthenon sculptures -- the prostitutes slaves and alien women who make a vital economic and ideological contribution to the Athenian achievement. -- TABLE OF CONTENTS: Acknowledgements List of Illustrations 1. When the transcript of the material on which this group portrait is based came to light ten years ago no one could have imagined the drama within. They were family letters: letters from a young woman to her brother and later to her suitor - of interest chiefly because all three were painters and all were active participants in the youthful Pre-Raphaelite revolution that swept England in the 1850s. They turned out to be a revelation - giving not only a comprehensive picture of what it was like to be an artist in the mid-19th century but containing within them a powerful family drama and a most unusual love story. It is a love story moreover told largely from a woman's point of view. Joanna Boyce's dedication to her art was absolute: she studied in Paris under Thomas Couture and had her first painting exhibited at the Academy when she was only 24. She was headstrong self-critical opinionated and teasing - 'an artist with her pen as well as her brush'. She died tragically young. Between them Joanna her brother George and suitor Henry Wells knew all the artistic luminaries of the day among them Ruskin Millais and Rossetti with whom George shared a great deal including mistresses. They wrote to each other not just about art but about their friends their favourite books their travels their illnesses their passions and their quarrels. In this book they tell their story in their own vivid words - a story which portrays the age in which they lived and the powerful drama of their emotional and professional lives. . 2012. 1843836173 . What roles did photography and the media play in constructing her iconography In an era when aviators were glamorous symbols of adventure and modernity she launched herself into instant celebrity by becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic her celebrity aided considerably by the flight promoter and publisher George Palmer Putnam whom she later married. For nearly 10 years from the late 20s to the late 30s newspapers and magazines profiled Earhart's record-breaking flights her forays into clothing designs and her endorsements for everything from cigarettes to luggage. Earhart in turn capitalized on the fame that her accomplishments brought her to champion the advancement of women and other causes about which she was passionate. In her unconventional pants and leather jacket she became the embodiment of the new roles that began to seem possible for American women in the 1920s and 30s. Through magazines newspapers original press photos and advertisements Image and Icon published on the occasion of the exhibition at New York's International Center of Photography traces the construction of Earhart's iconic image and its continued resonance today. . 2007. 386521407X . Accounts previously presented British film culture of the period as without either coherence or quality. This book refutes previous accounts by offering a comprehensive map which reveals a surprising commonality in theme and tone across a diverse range of films. British Cinema in the 1970s: The Boundaries of Pleasure sets the scene by describing the market conditions and economic legislative and censorship constraints on British cinema in the decade. The book then goes on to establish the key themes of the film culture of the 1970s: the transformation of gender relations social space cultural competence the landscape of ideas and generic forms. Its exploration of these themes reveals common moods: irony and anxiety suffuse the whole film culture. A shared visual and performance style is shown to characterise this diverse cinema. . 2011. 0748640789 . Edinburgh University Press hardcover

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- Interview w/the artist by Adam E. Mendelsohn poem by Sue Hubbard 56 pages 57 color illustrations small 4to. -- with a bonus offer--; Published to accompany Rachel Howard’s solo exhibition of new work at Bohen Foundation New York in June 2007 this book profiles Howard’s paintings and ink drawings on paper. Accompanying this is an insightful interview between Howard and New York-based critic Adam E. Mendelsohn which explores the new figurative direction Howard’s work is taking and a hauntingly beautiful poem by critic and poet Sue Hubbard. Howard’s new works incorporate dark shapes of hanging female figures that appear to have been poured onto the canvas all previous brushstrokes dissolved into a perfectly smooth expanse of paint. Embedded in the saturated colours and glossy surfaces that characterize Rachel Howard’s work the dire figures set up an uneasy tension between the subject matter and the vibrant physicality of colour surface and layered depth. The accompanying ink drawings which are dominated by female suicide also explore what the artist describes as the beauty of tragedy’. As Howard puts it suicide seems to be one of the last taboos shame and guilt and sin; all the things I love and hate.” . 2007. 1904212220 . Other Criteria hardcover
