2001réf. 91507Berkeley: University of California Press 2001. cloth paper cover and spine labels slipcase. Aldine Press. small 4to. cloth paper cover and spine labels slipcase. 671 3 pages. First edition. Fine in fine slipcase. This catalogue provides a descriptive bibliography of books in the Ahmanson-Murphy Aldine collection at the University of California Los Angeles together with abbreviated notices of works not at UCLA. Handsomely produced slipcased and carefully annotated this volume should become a major resource for Aldine studies and the history of the book. The Aldine Press revolutionized the production accessibility and use of the book. Founded by Aldus Manutius c. 1452-1515 the press introduced a number of innovations that helped shape the development of the modern book including italic type and the smaller pocket-sized volume. By putting the Greek and Latin classics in a form that everyone could afford it revolutionized scholarship: the uniform Aldine texts made comparison and collation universally available and they were used in schools. Collectors were interested in the Aldine Press from the beginning; Jean Grolier acquired over two hundred of its publications often having the books elegantly bound and handsomely illuminated. Since that time the output of the Aldine Press has been sought after by scholars book collectors and librarians. Copies of its books are found in libraries all over the world where they remain a prized possession and the object of much scholarly research. For thirty-two years Franklin D. Murphy who came to UCLA as its sixth chancellor fostered the expansion of the Aldine collection and encouraged its growth. During the greater part of this long period he was joined in these endeavors by the Ahmanson Foundation whose constant support permitted the collection to increase in both size and significance. Following Dr. Murphy's death the Ahmanson Foundation continued its generous support for the expansion of the collection and in addition by means of a grant late in 1996 enabled the present catalogue to come into existence. The binding cloth used for both the book and the slipcase is a Japanese book cloth no. 2504 distributed by the Campbell-Logan Bindery. The binding board is 110 point acid-free Eska board from Ecological Fibers Inc. University of California Press unknown books

In each of her novels Miller has written with exquisite precision about the experience of grace in daily life - the sudden epiphanic recognition of the extraordinary amid the ordinary - as well as the sharp and unexpected motions of the human heart away from it toward an unruly netherworld of upheaval and desire. But never before have Miller's powers been keener or more transfixing than they are in Lost in the Forest a novel set in the vineyards of Northern California that tells the story of a young girl who in the wake of a tragic accident seeks solace in a damaging love affair with a much older man. Eva a divorced and happily remarried mother of three runs a small bookstore in a town north of San Francisco. When her second husband John is killed in a car accident her family's fragile peace is once again overtaken by loss. Emily the eldest must grapple with newfound independence and responsibility. Theo the youngest can only begin to fathom his father's death. But for Daisy the middle child John's absence opens up a world of bewilderment exposing her at the onset of adolescence to the chaos and instability that hover just beyond the safety of parental love. In her sorrow Daisy embarks on a harrowing sexual odyssey a journey that will cast her even farther out onto the harsh promontory of adulthood and lost hope. With astonishing sensuality and immediacy Lost in the Forest moves through the most intimate realms of domestic life from grief and sex to adolescence and marriage. It is a stunning kaleidoscopic evocation of a family in crisis written with delicacy and masterful care. For her lifelong fans and those just discovering Sue Miller for the first time here is a rich and gorgeously layered tale of a family breaking apart and coming back together again: Sue Miller at her inimitable best. She was she claims perhaps the least constitutionally suited of all her siblings to be in the role in which she suddenly found herself and in The Story of My Father she grapples with the haunting memories of those final months and the larger narrative of her father's life. With compassion self-scrutiny and an urgency born of her own yearning to rescue her father's memory from the disorder and oblivion that marked his dying and death Sue Miller takes us on an intensely personal journey that becomes by virtue of her enormous gifts of observation perception and literary precision a universal story of fathers and daughters. James Nichols was a fourth-generation minister a retired professor from Princeton Theological Seminary. Sue Miller brings her father brilliantly to life in these pages-his religious faith his endless patience with his children his gaiety and willingness to delight in the ridiculous his singular gifts as a listener and the rituals of church life that stayed with him through his final days. She recalls the bitter irony of watching him a church historian wrestle with a disease that inexorably lays waste to notions of time history and meaning. She recounts her struggle with doctors her deep ambivalence about many of her own choices and the difficulty of finding continually the humane and moral response to a disease whose special cruelty it is to dissolve particularities and to diminish in so many ways the humanity of those it strikes. She reflects unforgettably on the variable nature of memory the paradox of trying to weave a truthful narrative from the threads of a dissolving life. And she offers stunning insight into her own life as both a daughter and a writer two roles that swell together here in a poignant meditation on the consolations of storytelling. With the care restraint and consummate skill that define her beloved and best-selling fiction Sue Miller now gives us a rigorous compassionate inventory of two lives in a memoir destined to offer comfort to all sons and daughters struggling-as we all eventually must-to make peace with their fathers and with themselves. The Wandering Jew French: Le Juif errant is an 1844 novel by the French writer Eugène Sue. Two figures cry out to each other across the Bering Straits. One is the Wandering Jew the other his sister Hérodiade. Wherever the Wandering Jew goes the cholera epidemic follows in his wake. The siblings are condemned to wander the earth until the entire Rennepont family has disappeared from the earth as Hérodiade's descendants are also the descendants of Marius de Rennepont Huguenots persecuted under Louis XIV by the Jesuits. The siblings are compelled to eternally protect that family. The Renneponts meanwhile are unaware that their protectors exist. The family lost its position and most of its wealth during the French persecution of the Protestants after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. A small fortune was given to a Jewish banker before the Renneponts dispersed all over Europe and Asia and this fortune has grown into a huge sum because of compound interest. In 1682 each Rennepont got a bronze medal telling them to meet back in Paris 150 years later at which time the fortune will be divided among the surviving members. So much time has passed however that almost none of the still-living Renneponts have any idea why they need to come to Paris. They nevertheless set out from India Siberia America France and elsewhere to make their way to rue Saint-François No. 3 in Paris by 13 February 1832. The members of the family are not only dispersed all over the world but also all over the social ladder as laborers factory owners and the independently wealthy. In India one Rennepont is a prince. The Jesuits have heard of this huge fortune and want to have it. Jesuit Père d'Aigrigny is in charge of obtaining the money for the Society of Jesus and dispossessing the Renneponts. Their plan is to have only the unwitting Gabriel Rennepont the Jesuit missionary show up to claim the fortune. Since he is a monk and can have no possessions of his own the fortune will go to the Jesuits. Gabriel entered the order because his pious mother manipulated by the Jesuits persuaded him to become a member. The Jesuits have spies all over the world and use them to put obstacles in the paths of the Renneponts as they make their way back to Paris. The John C. Winston Co hardcover books

Paintings from 2000-2006: Evanston Art Center 2603 Sheridan Road Evanston Illinois. Essay by Sue Taylor and James Yood. Richard Loving 1924 - 2021 was an American artist and educator primarily based in Chicago Illinois. He gained recognition in the 1980s as a member of the "Allusive Abstractionists" an informal group of Chicago painters whose individual forms of organic abstraction embraced evocative imagery and metaphor counter to the dominant minimalist mode. He is most known for paintings that critics describe as metaphysical and visionary which move fluidly between abstraction and representation personalized symbolism taking organic and geometric forms and chaos and order. They are often characterized by bright patterns of dotted lines and dashes enigmatic spatial fields and an illuminated quality. In 2010 critic James Yood wrote that Loving's work "mulled over the possibilities of pattern and representation of narrative and allegory" to attain a kind of wisdom transcendence and acknowledgement of universals "seeking understanding of self within the poetics of the physical world." Loving's art has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York Block Museum of Art Hyde Park Art Center and Brauer Museum of Art. His work belongs to the public collections of the Art Institute of Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and Smart Museum of Art among others. paperback books
