1967Best.-Nr. 39Book is very nearly fine a mild spine slant otherwise sharp clean solid bright in red cloth with gilt spine titles; dust jacket shows a ragged edge to rear flap a short closed edge tear to spine crown at the fold minor wear at both spine tips else bright near fine; lovely example of this hard-to-find book. Photos are of the actual book on offer not generic images the photo of the interior of the dust jacket has been slightly darkened in order to show the ragged edge of the rear flap more clearly. Scarce first edition of the debut novel by the future writer of the blockbuster Alphabet mystery series "A" is For Alibi etc. Not a mystery but a tale of a "soft-spoken strangely beautiful woman" who lost her husband and eldest son to a flood and must struggle to raise her other children "in an old abandoned pleasure-boat mud-anchored in a dry river bed." The portrait of a strong woman bodes of things to come with the later creation of Grafton's iconic Kinsey Milhone. Well-reviewed when first released and according to the jacket blurb published when Grafton was twenty-six years old with three kids of her own! "First printing" stated on copyright page. Lovely jacket painting by Andy Virgil. The Macmillan Company hardcover
