1901rif. 159431901. London: Macmillan and Co. 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt. First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction. The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" CGEL. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman becomes a disciple to a Lama and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier though in the same month as the English one. As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning. This is a very good-plus copy minor rubbing of the elephant-head and at the extremities; as always there is some foxing of the endpapers and of the frontispiece tissue guard. Richards A174; Stewart 254; Livingston 250. One of the books selected as a "Modern Library 100" for the 20th Century. Provenance: the front free endpaper bears the inked inscription "Jos Pulford "Alcinous" S.S." Between 1901 and 1905 "J. Pulford" was the master and commander of the SS Alcinous a British steamship launched in December 1899 that transported goods and passengers between the UK London and Glasgow Hong Kong and several ports in Australia; the vessel would not survive the Great War. unknown

Designated as a "Printers Copy" on front and rear pastedown there are some faded fingerprints on some pages foretips bumped very slightly cocked forged signatures of Eugene Field on the first free endpaper and Rudyard Kipling on the title page else very good. First American edition. In the 1920s and 1930s after burning through his father the poet and children's author Eugene Field's genuine estate his son Eugene "Pinny" Field II teamed up with the Chicago bookseller Harry Dayton Sickles to "enlarge" the late poet's library. In order to manufacture instant provenance for otherwise ordinary books they reproduced Eugene Field Sr's original bookplate oddly not present here wrote signed inscriptions to Field Sr. signed his name and "Chicago" and the date of either 1893 or 1895. They were very fond of forging Kipling's signature. Latest research suggests it was Sickles who was the forger Field the willing accomplice. With loose clipping of a collection of memorial tributes to Kipling from the Sunday Times 19 January 1936 Kipling had died on 18 January including a recollection from Pestonji Bomanji 1851-1938 a Mumbai-based Parsi artist who had studied at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy School of Art under Kipling's father and knew Kipling himself as as a child. Bomanji here recalls Kipling coming into the modelling studio at the J.J. School of Art and inventing 'childish romances around the models of nymphs gnomes and gargoyles'. He was the inspiration for the Just So Story 'How the Rhinoceros got his Wrinkly Skin' in which a rhinoceros steals a cake from a Parsi 'from whose hat the rays of the sun were reflected in more-than-oriental splendour' and lives to regret it hence the mention in his recollection here: 'I never remember giving Rudyard a cake .'. Octavo original cloth embossed black and gilt to the front panel gilt titles to the spine illustrated. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. An exceptional example. Kim unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel made the term "Great Game" popular and introduced the theme of great power rivalry and intrigue. It is set after the Second Afghan War which ended in 1881 but before the Third probably in the period 1893 to 1898. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people culture and varied religions of India. "The book presents a vivid picture of India its teeming populations religions and superstitions and the life of the bazaars and the road." Considered by many to be Kipling's masterpiece opinion appears varied about its consideration as children's literature or not. Roger Sale in his history of children's literature concludes "Kim is the apotheosis of the Victorian cult of childhood but it shines now as bright as ever long after the Empire's collapse." Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003 the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel.
