1899réf. 000304New York: Doubleday and McClure Company 1899. FIRST AMER. EDITION first printing. Light grey decorative binding with charming jungle scene stamped in darker grey and in white. Title page in red and black. 114pp. Printed in large type with wide margins on laid paper. A regimental tale. The "Fore and Aft" Regiment is the nickname of the fictional "The Fore and Fit Princess Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen-Anspach's Merther-Tydfilshire Own Royal Loyal Light Infantry Regimental District 329A." It is mentioned in "The Drums of the Fore and Aft" by Rudyard Kipling. The real-life basis for the "Fore and Aft" Regiment might be a nickname of the Glocester Regiment which has a cap badge on the front and back of its headdress. This is a battle honor earned when the regiment faced off two forces of enemy troops by standing its companies back-to-back. Kipling was probably playing cute by using a real regiment's nickname to provide realism but giving it a cover name to prevent embarrassing the real regiment. UncleAndy. First American Edition. Octavo original wrappers front wrapper detached. In good condition with chipping edge loss and fraying to the fragile printed wrappers. Written when Rudyard Kipling was 26 years old The Light That Failed is semi-autobiographical being based upon his own unrequited love for Florence Garrard. It follows the life of Dick Heldar an artist and painter who goes blind and his unrequited love for his childhood playmate Maisie. Laura J. W. rated 5. it was amazing · review of another edition Shelves: british-authors classics literary-fiction short-stories Kipling is of his time this must not be forgotten it's unfortunate that I feel I must say this as the current climate for such classics is tenuous. Each tale has its special cadence that is from a time and place that is exotic in one sense but yet not people are people no matter where they are it's the human condition inter-racial love soldier's on the verge of mutiny kings laborers life and death. I have loved Kiplings work since I was a little girl when we read "Rikki-Tikki Tavi" and "The Elephant's Child" and of course "The Jungle Book" I grew up with the Disney film but read the book later and loved it more. My copy is an old one a beautiful white and blue cloth cover with stamped gold leaf filigree and letters it's quite beautiful as an object in pristine condition for its age inscribed in faded black ink on the inside with a previous owners name and dated 1901. It caught my eye at my favorite antique shop the Antique Pavilion in Bouckeville NY and I am happy add it to my collection of vintage books. R. F. Fenno & Company hardcover
